About this hotel
General information
The Oberoi Sukhvilas lies in New Chandigarh, on the edge of the Siswan Forest in the Himalayan foothills, with more than 32 km² of protected woodland around it and, within its walls, manicured gardens, reflection pools and buildings in a traditional idiom. The main courtyard recalls the forts of Punjab and is lit by mashaal torches after dark, while the villas and tents take their cues from Rajasthan’s haveli mansions.
The resort is built around rest and wellbeing: the Asmi by Oberoi wellness space offers personalised Ayurvedic and holistic programmes, and the kitchens cook with seasonal produce from the resort’s own farm and herb garden. Guests stay in rooms, luxury tents and private-pool villas, each looked after by a butler. Modernist Chandigarh, with its parks and gardens, is half an hour’s drive away.
Location
The resort sits in Pallanpur village on the outskirts of New Chandigarh, in the state of Punjab, at the edge of the Siswan Forest. Central Chandigarh is about 30 minutes away, and the UNESCO-listed Capitol Complex and the Rock Garden are 20 km off. Chandigarh airport is 30 km away (45–55 minutes by road) and the railway station 25 km (around 45 minutes); New Delhi lies roughly 250 km to the south. Airport and station transfers are arranged on request.
Spa
Asmi by Oberoi rests on five pillars – movement, nutrition, bodywork, breathwork and mindfulness – and brings together personalised treatments, Ayurvedic and holistic programmes, meditation and modern fitness. The spa is open from 8am to 7.30pm to resident guests only, and appointments are best requested a day ahead. Private yoga sessions are tailored to any level, and couples can book an evening in a whirlpool with sparkling wine served by the butler.
Sports & leisure
A heated pool on the forest’s edge and a 24-hour gym with cardio machines and weights are joined by time outdoors and trips around the area.
- forest bathing walks in the Siswan Forest;
- a tour of Chandigarh’s trees with the resort’s naturalist, from banyan and peepal to jacaranda and gulmohar;
- off-roading and mountain biking in the Siswan Forest;
- private guided archery in the grounds, for guests aged 10 and over;
- golf at Chandigarh Golf Course;
- private guided tours of Chandigarh: the modernist Capitol Complex, the Rock Garden, the Rose Garden and the botanical gardens;
- private helicopter flights from Chandigarh airport to Amritsar;
- a cooking session with the chef after a walk through the herb garden, and a four-course Punjabi menu for two.
For children
Children can join cookie-making sessions with the chefs and private swimming lessons with an instructor, and supervised play areas offer outdoor games, arts and crafts. Babysitting is available on request.
Restaurants & bars
Menus draw on seasonal produce from the resort’s farm or local growers, and meals can move beyond the restaurants – to a carved domed gazebo, the lawns by Kaanan, a garden picnic or the side of a private pool.
- Anant Mahal – all-day dining with international and Ayurvedic, sattvic dishes, Indian classics, Amritsari specialities, seasonal soups, pizzas and risottos, set among fireplaces, crystal chandeliers and gold-leaf frescoes, with live folk music and dance in the courtyard;
- Kaanan – an Indian restaurant devoted to the flavours of Punjab, raised above a stretch of water, with a dining room or tables outdoors in the scent of the forest; dinner daily, lunch at weekends;
- Raunaq Bar – single malts, handcrafted cocktails, fine teas and single-origin coffee with light snacks, served in fireside armchairs beneath painted walls or outside above the torch-lit courtyard.
Swimming
The 20-metre heated outdoor pool sits at the edge of the forest, lined with sun loungers; it is open from 7am to 7pm in summer and 8am to 6pm in winter. The Kohinoor Villa, the Luxury Villa with Private Pool and the Royal Forest Tent with Private Pool each have their own temperature-controlled pool.
Pets
Pets are not permitted.
