Taj Rishikesh Resort & Spa, Uttarakhand

About this hotel

General information

The resort steps down a steep hillside above the Ganges near the village of Singthali, some 30 km from Rishikesh, among deciduous forest and the Shivalik hills of the Himalayan foothills. Spread over about 5 hectares, it was built with locally sourced materials in an architecture that echoes Himalayan villages and temple forts. The main Welcome House pavilion has a Garhwali feel – timber, stone and slate, carved jaali screens, open fireplaces, a play of natural light and antiques with local stories behind them.

There are 79 keys – 32 rooms and 47 villas – each placed to look out over the mountains and the river. The resort is EarthCheck certified and runs with sustainability in mind, and its dining, spa and outings take their cue from the region: Himalayan cooking, yoga, meditation and Ayurvedic rituals. At the foot of the slope lies its own pebble beach on the Ganges.

Location

The resort lies in the village of Singthali on the banks of the Ganges in Uttarakhand, about 30 km from Rishikesh, in the Himalayan foothills with the Shivalik hills as a backdrop. Airport transfers can be arranged on request, and the concierge and travel desk organise local transport.

Spa

J Wellness Circle sits tucked beneath the terrace of the spa lawn, reached by a spiral staircase and within earshot of the river rapids. The menu draws on Ayurvedic traditions and herbal oils, from shirodhara and the relaxing Nidra massage to Svastha, which combines cupping with warm herbal compresses, and Pehlwan Malish, the vigorous massage of Indian wrestlers. Each therapy begins with a steam ritual and ends in the relaxation lounge; there are two saunas, the Soma couples' ritual with a rose-petal bath, facials using the spa's own natural products, yoga and meditation sessions, and the niu&nau salon.

Sports & leisure

Facilities include a temperature-controlled outdoor pool, a fitness centre with floor-to-ceiling windows, yoga pavilions on the lawns and a resident yoga instructor. A naturalist leads a 3 km birding trek across a cable-suspension bridge to the far bank and through the Singthali forest. The resort also offers a mountain drive and walk at 1,524 m, where the snow-capped Himalayan ranges can be seen on a clear day, a guided walk along the private beach, river rafting on the Ganges with an outside operator, and private dining on a balcony, on the lawns, as a beach picnic or in a nearby hamlet. There is a library, a games room and evening entertainment.

For children

A kids' club sits next to the pool and the Pebble Beach restaurant, alongside a children's pool and a kids' activity area. Young guests can join the Wonderhive Passport programme, collecting stamps on a resort map and small rewards for the activities they complete, while the Paathyā initiative introduces children to nature through outdoor games and hands-on sessions.

Restaurants & bars

Three restaurants and a bar, each with views of the river or the mountains.

  • Rock Flour — all-day restaurant on the resort's upper level: Indian comfort food, Himalayan specialities and international dishes, with an open-air terrace facing the Ganges and the mountains;
  • Riverside — signature restaurant on a lower meadow by the river, reworking hill recipes from Garhwal, Kumaon and Himachal Pradesh, dinner only;
  • Pebble Beach — open-air pizza bar by the pool overlooking the pebble beach: pizza, antipasti, salads and pasta;
  • Panorama Bar — a drawing-room bar with a verandah, fireplace and library: signature cocktails, fine spirits and small plates.
Swimming

The main outdoor infinity-edge pool, temperature-controlled, sits beside the Pebble Beach restaurant; there is also a children's pool, and the Luxury Pool Villa and Presidential Villa have pools of their own. At the foot of the resort a private pebble beach on the Ganges is set aside for walks and time by the water.
