About this hotel
General information
Matild Palace occupies a Belle Époque palace on Váci utca by Ferenciek tere, where the Pest bank meets Elisabeth Bridge. Its towered, richly ornamented façade is one of the most striking in central Budapest, and a meticulous restoration has turned the building into a Luxury Collection hotel of 111 rooms and 19 suites, many of them looking out over the Danube.
Inside, old-world grandeur, Art Nouveau touches and a lighter contemporary hand sit together: accents of teal, gold and copper, headboards crafted by Hungarian artisans, herringbone parquet and works by Hungarian artists on the walls. Life in the palace revolves around the Spago restaurant, The Duchess, a hidden rooftop bar, the Milanese pastry house Cova and the Ocean Spa with its hammam rituals. The concierge team, all members of Les Clefs d’Or, shapes the city around each guest, from hard-to-get tables to private excursions.
Location
The hotel stands in Belváros, the historic heart of Pest, at Váci utca 36, with Ferenciek tere and its metro station on the doorstep; the Danube-facing windows take in Elisabeth Bridge and the Buda bank. Nearby sights include St Stephen’s Basilica, the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, Buda Castle, Margaret Island and the Hungarian State Opera. Budapest Airport is 21 km away; there is no shuttle, but the hotel arranges private cars and vans with drivers. Guests’ cars are parked by the hotel’s valet team at an off-site car park.
Spa
Ocean Spa takes its cue from the calm of the sea and pairs traditional thermal therapies with hammam rituals. There is a steam room and separate lounges for men and women; the menu covers massages, including treatments for couples, facials, body scrubs and wraps and foot baths, with treatments using ESPA products as well as indigenous Hungarian ingredients. Appointments are required.
Sports & leisure
The gym is open to guests around the clock, with treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes, rowing machines, stair climbers, weight machines and free weights. The concierge arranges private walking tours of Budapest from Heroes’ Square to the Castle District, a culinary trail through the markets, the Great Market Hall among them, with tastings of Hungarian dishes and wines, a route through grand old coffee houses and modern roasteries, a private Danube trip aboard a mahogany water limousine, yacht charters, visits to the Széchenyi and Gellért baths, tastings at boutique wineries, including around Lake Balaton, and day trips to the Danube Bend for Esztergom, Visegrád and Szentendre. For events there are five rooms: the Duke Ballroom holds up to 150 guests and divides into three, and the Matild Ballroom has a hydraulic raised stage.
Restaurants & bars
Dining spans a restaurant, a rooftop bar and a Milanese pastry house, with room service around the clock:
- Spago — contemporary Californian cooking with Hungarian and global accents on a seasonal menu; the Sunday brunch has become a favourite with locals and guests alike
- The Duchess — a secret bar set among Budapest’s rooftops, reached by private lifts from a hidden entrance, with a library of rare spirits, signature cocktails, fine wines and views over the Danube; over-18s only
- Cova Budapest — a Milanese pastry house serving Italian dishes all day, from breakfast to afternoon coffee and aperitivo, with a shop for its signature panettone, chocolates and gift boxes
