Villa Bokéh

About this hotel

General information

Villa Bokéh is a small hotel on the edge of Antigua Guatemala, set in a former private estate that was once home and workplace to artists. The colonial-style house, arranged around inner plazas and galleries, sits in six acres of gardens with lawns, flower borders, a small lake and open views of Agua Volcano. There are just 15 rooms and suites, each designed differently, down to its colour and its name.

Interiors are built from handmade detail: restored antique furniture, black-and-white photographs from across Guatemala, sculpture, wallpaper patterned on Guatemalan textiles and tiles made by hand for the house, with a recurring bird motif. The kitchens work with Guatemalan produce and recipes, much of the vegetables and herbs coming from the hotel’s own garden.

Location

The hotel lies on the green outskirts of Antigua Guatemala, 3.1 km from the centre of the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guatemala City’s international airport is about 40 km away, and the front desk arranges private road transfers. A shuttle or tuk-tuk into central Antigua Guatemala can be booked, and there is a helipad in the grounds.

Spa

Massages, reflexology, face masks and facials are offered on request and booked through reception. In rooms with a tub, the room attendant will draw a bath scattered with bougainvillea petals at a time of the guest’s choosing. Yoga classes are taught by local instructors.

Sports & leisure

Most of the time here is spent in the gardens and by the small lake.

  • A walk along the garden paths, with QR codes by the plants explaining the local flora.
  • A canoe outing on the lake, followed by a picnic.
  • A garden picnic with a basket from the kitchen; the menu, a tote bag and a blanket are left in the room.
  • Yoga classes with local instructors.
  • Giant Jenga and cricket in the shared spaces.
  • Evening s’mores with a Guatemalan twist, made with champurrada biscuits, by the fire or in the room.
  • A guided walking tour of Antigua Guatemala taking in the cathedral and the colonial churches and monasteries of the old town, with transport to the starting point included.
For children

For children there is the Elf Hunt, a search for gnomes hidden around the gardens: a map comes from reception, and a treat waits at the end.

Restaurants & bars

Both restaurants cook with Guatemalan ingredients, mostly from local farms and the hotel’s own garden, and tortillas are made fresh every morning.

  • Bokéh 3.1 — a bistro reworking traditional Guatemalan recipes with modern technique, open from breakfast until late evening and also serving room service
  • Casa Cristal — a light-filled glass pavilion for long breakfasts, brunch, lunch and dinner built on seasonal Guatemalan cooking
  • Honesty Bar — a help-yourself bar for guests, looking over the gardens
Swimming

There is no sea nearby. The grounds have a pool, while the small lake in the gardens is for canoeing rather than swimming.

Pets

Pets are accepted on certain conditions and should be agreed with the hotel in advance.

Rooms

Two Deluxe rooms and 13 suites of several categories sit on the ground and upper floors around the inner plazas and gardens. Each is named after a colour and none repeats another: many have a terrace or patio with a fire pit, and some add a mezzanine, a bathtub facing the volcano or a fireplace.

In each room

Every room has air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a telephone, a safe, a coffee maker, purified drinking water, a pillow menu, morning ginger shots and green juices, and in the evening a calming tea, an eye mask and a choice of essential oils.
