Las Lagunas Boutique Hotel

About this hotel

General information

Las Lagunas Boutique Hotel stands on a private estate of more than 300 acres in the forests of Petén, in northern Guatemala, where lagoons, open savanna and old oak woods have been kept as a nature reserve rather than cleared for farming. Its 20 suites line the water: most are freestanding bungalows on the shore of Quexil Lagoon, the largest of the estate’s five lagoons, and a few sit among the trees above another lake. The buildings were designed to sit lightly on the land.

This is a small, service-minded hotel with a round-the-clock reception, a restaurant facing the lagoon, an infinity pool, a spa with saunas and a museum of its own that shows archaeological pieces and works of art. It makes a comfortable base for the great Maya sites of the region — Tikal, Yaxhá, Uaxactún — reached on private tours arranged by the hotel, with slower days spent on the lagoons by kayak or boat.

Location

The hotel lies 1.5 km along the road to San Miguel, just outside Flores, the island town on Lake Petén Itzá in the Petén department. The airport at Flores is about 10 minutes away, served by the hotel’s shuttle on prior request. Flights from Guatemala City’s international airport take around 45 minutes; by car the journey is roughly 8 hours. Guests arriving by helicopter can use one of four helipads on the property, with coordinates given on request.

Spa

The spa offers a choice of massages, some made with local ingredients, in a quiet forest setting filled with birdsong. Every massage includes use of the wet and dry saunas, the jacuzzi and the pool. Yoga classes are also held: a gentle session for travellers recovering from a long journey and a mindful practice centred on breathing and body alignment.

Sports & leisure

Every suite’s rate includes a boat trip across Quexil Lagoon to Monkey Island, one of its two islands, where monkeys live.

Kayaks for the estate’s lagoons and bicycles are on hand, and there are guided tours through the nature reserve and private boat outings on the lagoon. The hotel also arranges private tours to the archaeological sites of Petén:

  • Tikal — the Great Plaza and Temples I–IV in the forest, with most of the walk in deep shade and lunch at a restaurant inside Tikal National Park;
  • Yaxhá and Topoxté — a densely built ancient city with temples, old causeways and a ball court;
  • Uaxactún, in the north of Petén — a Classic-period astronomical observatory;
  • Ceibal — by boat along the La Pasión River to a Maya city in the rainforest of southern Petén;
  • Aguateca — by boat through the Petexbatún stream and lagoon to a city of the late Classic period;
  • The Blue Crater — a crystal-clear stream with underwater gardens in the El Pucté reserve.
Restaurants & bars

Shultun, the restaurant overlooking the lagoon, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner: international cooking with local flavours, built on produce from nearby suppliers, with wines chosen to match the dishes and a list of spirits. The Pool Bar offers snacks and tropical drinks by the water, and room service is available. Private dinners can be arranged, as can an evening with a bottle of wine as the moon rises over the lagoon.

Swimming

The infinity pool looking over the lagoon is the main place to swim, open from 6:30 am to 9 pm, with the Pool Bar alongside. The spa adds a jacuzzi and saunas, and every suite has its own jacuzzi on the terrace.

The 20 suites all look over the water: bungalows set right on the shore of Quexil Lagoon and Master Suites among the trees above one of the estate’s lakes. Each has a terrace with a private jacuzzi and a bathroom with a cascade shower.
