El Convento Boutique Hotel

About this hotel

General information

El Convento Boutique Hotel is an intimate hotel in the historic centre of Antigua Guatemala, the colonial city on UNESCO's World Heritage List. It occupies a restored colonial building set around quiet courtyards, and its interiors pair the lines of traditional Guatemalan architecture with present-day comfort: carefully chosen furnishings, work by local artists and rooms that are each decorated differently. Many have a fireplace, and several open onto a private garden patio, some with their own jacuzzi.

Days here move between the courtyards, the roof terrace with its panoramic views and the restaurant, which brings Guatemalan flavours together with international cooking from breakfast through to dinner. Massages can be booked in-house, and the hotel arranges guided walks through the old city and private trips to Pacaya volcano. Service is personal and unhurried, with the attention of a small hotel, which makes El Convento a natural fit for couples and travellers who want a quiet base within walking distance of Antigua Guatemala's churches, plazas and ruins.

Location

The hotel stands on 2a Avenida Norte in the heart of Antigua Guatemala's historic centre, with the old city's cobbled streets, colonial architecture, ruins and plazas all within walking distance. Wi-Fi and parking are available to guests.

Spa

Massages can be booked at the hotel: relaxing, therapeutic, Balinese, deep-tissue and hot-stone, most in 60- or 90-minute versions, as well as reflexology.

Sports & leisure

The hotel's own programme is built around the old city and its surroundings. A three-hour guided walking tour, with a guide speaking English and Spanish, follows cobbled streets past Antigua Guatemala's colonial architecture, ruins and plazas. A private Pacaya volcano tour includes transport and a guide, with trails climbing through forest towards the crater and wide views over the surrounding countryside. Hiking, golf and coffee plantation visits are among the other outings the hotel suggests nearby.

Restaurants & bars

The hotel restaurant sets Guatemalan dishes beside international ones. Breakfast runs from the Antigueño plate — eggs, chorizo, black beans, fried plantains and cheese — and chilaquiles to eggs Benedict, pancakes and waffles, with the house El Convento Blend tea. At lunch and dinner the menu moves through tuna tartare and carpaccio, corn soup with chipilín, sea bass baked in paper with chiltepe pepper, shrimp in pibil sauce, beef tenderloin, pasta and risotto, finishing with plantains in mole or crème brûlée. The kitchen also caters private gatherings.

Rooms

The rooms are spread over two levels around the courtyards, each decorated in its own way: on the ground floor they open onto private garden patios, with a jacuzzi in the Premium Jacuzzi category, while the upper-level rooms have their own decor and, in the Superior Balcony category, a balcony; many have a fireplace. The Master Suites are individually styled and can include a colonial patio with a fountain, a living and dining area and a jacuzzi.
