About this hotel
General information
Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort occupies a private 75-hectare estate on the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein, in the countryside known as Holstein Switzerland: an old landscape park with a pond, woodland, meadows and its own 3 km natural beach. The estate was founded in 1607 and takes its name from the manor house's white walls, an unusual colour for the period. The castle, the cavalier houses and the old lime avenue are listed monuments of the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
Rooms and restaurants are spread across eleven carefully restored buildings, from the castle and the old bakehouse to a thatched dairy by the dyke and a bathing cottage on the shore; several were rebuilt to historical models and with their original purpose in mind. There are 60 rooms and suites, and no more than 120 guests stay at any one time. A member of Relais & Châteaux, the resort centres on nature, its spa and cooking based on local producers, and takes stays of two nights or more.
Location
Weissenhaus lies on the Baltic coast between the small towns of Oldenburg in Holstein and Lütjenburg, about an hour's drive from Hamburg; the estate's park runs right down to the sea. Lübeck Airport is 70 km away (around 30 minutes) and Hamburg Airport 120 km (around an hour); a limousine service can be arranged on request. By train and bus from Hamburg, Oldenburg in Holstein takes about two hours, with an onward taxi booked by the hotel. Helicopters can land on the large paddock behind the castle, and a complimentary chauffeur service runs around the grounds from 8 am to 10 pm.
Spa
The Schlosstherme is a 3,000 m² spa in an 1817 building that once served as the estate's southern cavalier house. It has a 20-metre indoor-outdoor pool at 32 °C opening onto the castle garden, an open-air brine whirlpool at 34 °C, a Japanese-style onsen pool at 38 °C on the edge of the woods and a cold-water pool. Six saunas and steam rooms – Finnish sauna, soft bio sauna, steam bath, salt-herb sauna, salt and aerosol room, and a private sauna heated on request – make up the sauna area, which is textile-free; the Solewaldraum with the onsen is reserved for guests aged 16 and over. Treatments include partial and full-body massages, head, neck and shoulder massage, foot reflexology, a linen-glove dry body scrub with massage, a Rasul ritual in the hammam lounge, JetPro Duo and microdermabrasion facials, and personalised Doctor BABOR care. Guests staying in the castle reach the spa through an underground tunnel lined with an illuminated exhibition on the estate's history.

- a fitness area in the Schlosstherme with strength and cardio equipment;

For children
The estate is above all a place of quiet, but families are welcome. Near reception, the Kükenhaus is a play house where children, supervised by their parents, paint and make things in the craft room, read in the fairy-tale room and play in the garden; it is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Children under 12 may use the Schlosstherme daily from 10 am to 2 pm with an accompanying adult, while the Solewaldraum is for guests aged 16 and over. NAMI and the Bootshaus have children's menus, and babysitting can be booked 48 hours ahead. The best-suited categories for families are the Spa Suite Delights, Suite at the Stellmacherei, Suite at the Gartenvilla and Signature Suite.
Restaurants & bars
The kitchens work largely with produce from local suppliers and farms in the region:
- Kavaliershaus – the breakfast restaurant, with a terrace overlooking the castle pond and village centre: a buffet with pastries from the estate bakery, egg dishes and hot snacks, daily from 7.30 am to noon (no breakfast in the room);
- NAMI – Asian cooking in the castle: sushi rolls, dim sum to Chinese recipes, robata-grill dishes and a sharing menu;
- Bootshaus – a restaurant right on the beach with wide terraces and sea views: Mediterranean cooking in the spirit of Italian classics, using seasonal regional produce, for lunch and dinner; private dinners in a beach cabana or the Vogelnest above the sea on request;
- the bar in the Hall of Mirrors next to NAMI – coffee, homemade cakes, champagne and wine daily from 1 pm to midnight;
- Bar 1896 – a cocktail bar in the castle's old vaulted cellars, with its own wine cellar;
- Vitalbar – light lunches, smoothies and bowls in the Schlosstherme's glazed conservatory loft, for spa guests only;
- Vinothek – a wine room in the castle vault with rare bottles and tastings.
Swimming
The estate opens onto a 3 km natural sandy beach on the Baltic Sea; from the Meierei and Deichkate buildings the water is a minute's walk away. Next to the Bootshaus restaurant, the Bootshaus Lounge has private beach cabanas with Dedon daybeds, towels and refreshments, and in the warmer months hooded wicker beach chairs can be hired. In any weather there is the 20-metre pool at 32 °C in the Schlosstherme, together with the open-air brine whirlpool and the onsen pool.
Pets
Dogs are accepted in selected categories on prior request and written confirmation, one per room; a basket, bowls and a treat are provided. Dogs must be kept on a lead throughout the grounds, including on the restaurant terraces, and are not allowed in the Schlosstherme. Dog-sitting can be arranged 48 hours ahead, and there is a dedicated dog beach to the left of the Bootshaus. The Signature Suite and Junior Terrace Suite cannot be booked with a dog.
