Hotel Traube Tonbach

About this hotel

General information

Hotel Traube Tonbach is a family-run house in the quiet, wooded Tonbach valley of the northern Black Forest, where hospitality has been handed down through the generations for more than two centuries. It began as a simple inn for the woodcutters and charcoal burners who worked the surrounding forests; today it is a hotel of the highest category, known above all for its cooking — its Schwarzwaldstube has long been a byword for fine dining in Germany.

The 132 rooms, suites and apartments are spread between the main building and Haus Kohlwald. Interiors combine natural materials, Black Forest craftsmanship and contemporary comfort, and most windows and balconies face the valley slopes. Beyond the restaurants, guests come for a spa and pool area of more than 4,500 m² fed by the hotel’s own spring, the large Kids Court children’s centre and a daily programme of guided walks and bike rides. Breakfast and an afternoon buffet are included in the room rate; half board is available on request.

Location

The hotel lies in the Tonbach district of Baiersbronn in the northern Black Forest, between Stuttgart, Strasbourg and Freiburg, close to the Black Forest National Park. Guests arriving by train are collected free of charge from Baiersbronn station; a bus stops in front of the hotel, and the concierge can arrange limousine transfers. There is free parking in front of the hotel, a paid garage and a valet service.

Spa

The spa area covers more than 4,500 m² indoors and out. Its sauna landscape includes a gentle forest sauna at 45–50 °C, a sound sauna, an infusion sauna at 90 °C, an infrared cabin, a sanarium, a floral steam bath and an ice igloo for cooling off. Massages use organic oils from Lola’s Apothecary, facials and hand and foot care rely on QMS Medicosmetics, and La Biosthétique products complete the range; the spa team tailors each programme to the guest. Haus Kohlwald has a separate family sauna, where swimwear is worn, with a steam room and panoramic views.

Sports & leisure

Much of the activity programme is included in the stay. Guided walks run four times a week, and themed hiking weeks cover 6–16 km a day; around 550 km of trails surround Baiersbronn, and the award-winning Murgleiter route passes the hotel. Also on offer:

  • free hire of e-mountain bikes, step-through e-bikes, standard bikes and children’s bikes, a bike garage with charging and guided bike tours;
  • a fitness room, yoga, BodyART and Pilates, back classes and swimming lessons;
  • tennis and football camps for children;
  • a cookery school with courses for beginners and keen home cooks;
  • excursions to Freudenstadt, Baden-Baden, Alpirsbach Abbey, Strasbourg and Colmar;
  • an 18-hole golf course in Freudenstadt, about 12 km away.

Four rooms of 33–360 m² host meetings and celebrations.

For children

Children from three years old are looked after at Kids Court, a large indoor play centre with a trampoline, climbing wall, football pitch, basketball hoops, a play street, a craft workshop and a chill-out room. The team runs daily cooking sessions, parties, barbecues and outings, and children’s lunch and dinner at the club are free; on Fridays, Saturdays and during school holidays it stays open until 10 pm. Outside, an adventure playground draws on the Black Forest’s old crafts, and teenagers have their own sports programme. Families also have a children’s pool, the family sauna, spa treatments for ages 4–14, family apartments, cots and baby equipment, and a babysitter on request.

Restaurants & bars

Food is the main reason many guests come, and the line-up of venues reflects it:

  • Schwarzwaldstube — haute cuisine with a modern take on the classic French tradition; tasting menus, including a vegetarian one, and seasonal à la carte dishes, in a room with a full-height glass façade facing the valley;
  • 1789 — an intimate gourmet restaurant pairing seasonal produce with Far Eastern flavours;
  • Schatzhauser — Swabian and Baden dishes, favourites from around the world and grilled steaks, with views over the Tonbach valley;
  • Silberberg — breakfast buffet, afternoon buffet and an evening menu, with buffets on Fridays and Sundays;
  • Hotel Bar — classic and signature cocktails and a wide choice of premium spirits;
  • Rosengärtle — light lunches, ice cream, cakes and coffee in a garden setting;
  • Poolbistro — juices, salads, fruit and light dishes within the spa area;
  • Blockhütte — a hikers’ cabin serving cakes and hearty cabin dishes, with raclette and fondue evenings in winter.
Swimming

The pools are filled with water from the hotel’s own Tonbach spring. A heated outdoor pool overlooking the forest is open all year, alongside two pools for lane swimming, three whirlpools and a children’s pool; Haus Kohlwald adds an indoor relaxation pool. The pool area opens daily from 6 am to 8 pm.

Skiing

In winter, snow sports and snow trails are close by, and the hotel also offers horse-drawn carriage rides and winter walks.

Pets

Dogs are welcome in all Haus Kohlwald rooms by prior arrangement and subject to availability. They receive a bed and bowls, dog-sitting can be arranged, and the Traube Lädle shop sells accessories and food. Dogs may join their owners in the Hotel Bar, Schatzhauser and the Blockhütte, but not in the spa, the wellness area or on the sunbathing lawn.
