About this hotel
General information
The Fontenay stands on the shore of the Outer Alster in Hamburg’s Rotherbaum district, framed by old trees and parkland. Its radiant white, sculptural building takes its form from the circle, and flowing curved lines run through it inside and out. A member of The Leading Hotels of the World, it feels like a resort in the city while keeping the shops and museums of the centre within walking distance.
Interiors are light and understated, with natural materials, designer furniture, original artwork and floor-to-ceiling glass throughout; at the heart of the building is an atrium with a curving staircase and a crystal chandelier. The hotel is home to the gourmet restaurant Lakeside, the garden restaurant Parkview and the Italian Osteria due, a rooftop bar overlooking the Alster, a library of more than a thousand books and a 1,000 m² spa with an infinity pool.
Location
The hotel sits on the western shore of the Outer Alster in Rotherbaum. The 7.5 km running loop around the lake starts at the door, and the Alte Rabenstraße pier for the Alster boats is close by. Dammtor station and Stephansplatz underground station (U1) are about 10 minutes’ walk away, the “Fontenay” stop of bus 19 three minutes, Jungfernstieg 15 minutes and the Hamburger Kunsthalle around 15 minutes on foot; the main railway station is five minutes by taxi. Hamburg Airport is 9.5 km away, around 25 minutes by car. The hotel will collect guests from the airport or the station on request and arranges limousine transfers through its concierge; parking is available on the driveway and in the hotel garage.
Spa
The Fontenay Spa spreads over 1,000 m² high above the rooftops of Hamburg, looking out over the Outer Alster. It has a 20 m indoor-outdoor infinity pool, a Finnish sauna (90 °C), a steam bath (45 °C), quiet rooms and a large spa lounge with panoramic windows. Massages and body treatments draw on traditional and modern techniques with international influences. The 50 m² Private Spa Suite, booked separately for up to six people, has its own sauna, steam room, whirlpool, wellness shower and relaxation areas. The spa is open daily from 7 am to 10 pm, and access is included for hotel guests. Massages and the sauna are open to guests from 13 with a parent or guardian and from 16 on their own.
Sports & leisure
The gym is equipped with strength and cardio machines from Technogym’s Personal line, and the hotel can book a personal trainer. The 7.5 km running loop around the Alster begins at the door, and the rooftop infinity pool is open for laps every day. Indoors there is a library of more than a thousand books chosen with the Hamburg bookshop Felix Jud, a day bar selling goods from Hamburg makers, and a smoker’s lounge with a small selection of cigars. The pier for the Alster boats is a few minutes away.
For children
Children up to and including 12 stay free in their parents’ room, with a cot or extra bed subject to availability, and connecting rooms are available for families. Young guests find children’s bathrobes, slippers, a cuddly toy and the booklet “Fonti’s Tips for Kids” with ideas for exploring Hamburg; the library keeps a shelf of children’s books, and Parkview and Osteria due both have children’s menus. Children are welcome in the pool, where the hours from 11:00 to 12:00 and from 15:00 to 16:00 are set aside each day for livelier play with pool noodles and other equipment.

Dogs are welcome on the terraces of Parkview and Osteria due but are not allowed in the hotel’s indoor public areas, inside the restaurants or in the Fontenay Bar.
