Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden

About this hotel

General information

Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden occupies a Saxon Baroque palace built in 1705 opposite Dresden Castle, at the very centre of the Innere Altstadt between the Zwinger and the Semperoper. Its Baroque façades, grand staircase and courtyard keep the spirit of courtly Dresden, and the palace has long been one of the city’s most celebrated hotel addresses.

There are 180 rooms and 31 suites, furnished with bespoke pieces under high ceilings in a palette of historic blue and sage green that draws on the landmarks of the old town. The house has a seafood gourmet restaurant, Kastenmeiers, the Das Palais restaurant, the Amalie pâtisserie and the cocktail-led Bar 1705, with a spa, pool and saunas on the fifth floor. For grand occasions there is the Kurfürstensaal ballroom for up to 500 guests and a historic private chapel for weddings, and guests are looked after by the Ladies and Gentlemen in Red, hosts who know the hotel and the city in depth.

Location

The hotel stands at Taschenberg 3 in Dresden’s historic centre: the Zwinger and Dresden Castle are a two-minute walk away, the Semperoper 200 m, the Frauenkirche and the Neumarkt about five minutes on foot, and the Elbe promenade just beyond. Dresden Airport is about 10.7 km away, 20–30 minutes by car depending on traffic; the main railway station is 3.6 km away, around ten minutes by car or eight minutes on tram 11 from Postplatz. The concierge arranges transfers by car or limousine, and an underground car park with direct access to the hotel offers valet parking and charging points for electric cars.

Spa

The Taschenbergpalais Spa is finished in earthy tones with blue-violet accents, using sandstone, wood and porcelain. Its sauna area has two Finnish saunas — one with a copper kettle for aroma infusions, a C.H. Wolf clock from Glashütte set into the ceiling and a rendition of the famous Fürstenzug mural — together with a steam bath and an infrared cabin. Therapists offer partial massages for the back, legs or arms, an aromatic essential-oil massage, hot-stone therapy, an Ayurvedic massage with warm organic herbal oils and an anti-ageing facial built around wild indigo extract. Treatments run daily for guests aged 16 and over.

Sports & leisure

The Fitness Suite is open from 6:30 to 22:00, with a treadmill, a rowing machine, free weights, exercise mats and wall bars. Yoga sessions can be arranged on the Bel Etage beneath chandeliers, looking out over the old town, and the hotel has mapped its own running routes along the Elbe. The concierge books tickets for opera, theatre and museums and arranges guided walks through the historic centre and the art district, as well as trips to Saxon Switzerland for hiking or rock climbing.

For children

There is no kids’ club, but families are well provided for: cots can be placed in the rooms, extra beds fit the larger categories, and connecting rooms are available. The pool keeps dedicated children’s hours every day, 10:00–11:30 and 15:00–16:30, with an adult present; guests under 18 may use the pool and saunas until 18:00 when accompanied, and spa treatments are open to those aged 16 and over.

Restaurants & bars

The palace’s restaurants and bars cover the day from breakfast to a late cocktail:

  • Das Palais — contemporary European and international cooking between Dresden Castle and the Zwinger, with a signature menu of up to five courses or à la carte; open for dinner Thursday to Sunday
  • Kastenmeiers — a gourmet fish and seafood restaurant with freshwater and saltwater aquariums of trout, char and lobster above the open kitchen, and a daily four-course surprise menu paired with wine
  • Kastenmeiers Wine and Champagne Bar — wines and champagnes from classics to rarities, served with small plates from the Kastenmeiers kitchen
  • Amalie — pâtisserie and lounge beside the Baroque grand staircase, with coffee and tea, classic afternoon tea, house-made cakes and tartlets, a few savoury dishes and a fireplace
  • Bar 1705 — named after the year the palace was founded, a 1920s-style cocktail bar inspired by New York’s Oak Room, with signature cocktails, whiskies and bar dishes
  • Alpine Chalet — an alpine hut raised in the courtyard each year for the autumn and winter season, serving Austrian cheese and meat fondues with Austrian wines
  • Breakfast Restaurant — a buffet built on regional produce, served in the courtyard in summer

In-room dining runs around the clock, with a separate late-night menu.

Swimming

The indoor pool on the fifth floor measures 5 × 11 m and is 1.34 m deep, with water kept at 28 °C all year and the Taschenbergpalais emblem set in blue tiles on the bottom. Loungers line both sides, a bar serves fresh drinks, and bathrobes and slippers are provided in the changing rooms. The pool is open daily from 7:00 to 22:00.

Pets

Dogs are warmly welcomed, with a bed and blanket, a feeding bowl, walks, treats and their own menu — poached salmon fillet with rice or turkey breast with potatoes, cooked without spices or bones; a nightly charge applies. Dogs may join their owners in the lobby, on the restaurant terraces, in Amalie, at Kastenmeiers and in the rooms (except the Royal Suite), but not in Das Palais, the breakfast restaurant, the Alpine Chalet or Bar 1705. Assistance dogs are allowed everywhere.
