About this hotel
General information
Kempinski Hotel Berchtesgaden sits 1,000 metres up on a mountain plateau above Berchtesgaden, surrounded by the Berchtesgaden Alps and facing the Watzmann massif, the Berchtesgaden valley and the mountains towards Salzburg. The house pairs Kempinski’s five-star service with Bavarian warmth and an unhurried Alpine pace, equally suited to days spent hiking or skiing and to quiet hours simply watching the peaks.
There are 138 rooms and suites, most with a balcony or terrace. Dining ranges from Gourmet Restaurant PUR and the Bavarian Johann Grill to the rustic Bergstüberl, known for fondue and hot-stone dinners, and the fireside Lobby Lounge & Kaminbar. Kempinski The Spa covers 1,400 m² with an indoor pool and saunas, an in-house Activity Concierge team plans hikes, bike tours and ski days, and the Lady in Red, Kempinski’s signature host, looks after guests from arrival. The grounds include a helicopter landing pad.
Location
The hotel stands above Berchtesgaden, about 5 km from the town’s main railway station — ten minutes by taxi or a quarter of an hour on bus 838. Lake Königssee is 9 km away, Salzburg about 30 minutes by car and Munich 160 km, roughly two hours’ drive. Salzburg Airport lies 27.5 km away (30 minutes by car, 10 minutes by helicopter) and Munich Airport 196 km (about two and a half hours by car, one hour by helicopter). The hotel has its own helipad and arranges a limousine transfer from Salzburg Airport on request; cars are parked in an outdoor car park or the private garage, with charging for electric vehicles.
Spa
Kempinski The Spa covers 1,400 m², with an indoor pool, a Finnish sauna and a tepidarium, a steam bath with coloured light, a Physiotherm infrared cabin, a solarium and a meditation lounge with waterbeds, plus a garden with sun loungers in the warmer months. Treatments draw on the Alps and the seasons: the Alpine Bespoke Massage, Dr. Babor facials, scrubs, wraps and spa journeys such as the Alpine Journey, which combines body brushing, a massage and an express facial. The sauna area is textile-free, and the spa, saunas, gym and treatments are open to guests aged 16 and over.
Sports & leisure
The gym, with Technogym equipment and floor-to-ceiling windows onto the mountains, is open to hotel guests around the clock. From a desk in the lobby, the Activity Concierge team organises the outdoors in every season:
- summer — Mondraker e-bike hire and guided rides, including a sundowner tour and a Königssee route, Alpine walking, group jogging, mountain hikes and climbing
- further afield — canyoning, white-water rafting, tandem paragliding, Segway tours starting at the hotel, scenic helicopter flights and boat trips on Lake Königssee
- golf — the nine-hole course of Golf-Club Berchtesgaden 1 km from the hotel, with several more courses across the region
- winter — guided snowshoe hikes, a weekly torchlight walk, tobogganing and horse-drawn sleigh rides
For children
Children have an outdoor playground and an indoor playroom, and cots can be placed in the rooms. Under-16s may use the pool during the day when accompanied by an adult. The Activity Concierge team suggests family outings such as a 600-metre summer toboggan run five minutes from the hotel, a nearby eagle and marmot enclosure, the Berchtesgaden salt mine and a mountain farm with animals. Gourmet Restaurant PUR welcomes children from the age of 12.
Restaurants & bars
The restaurants and bar cover the whole day, from an Alpine breakfast to dinner with the mountains in view:
- Gourmet Restaurant PUR — classic European cuisine with refined regional touches and a menu that follows the seasons; a vegetarian alternative on request; evenings from Wednesday to Saturday
- Restaurant Johann Grill — Bavarian and regional cooking with a terrace facing the Berchtesgaden mountains; the Alpine breakfast buffet is served here daily (until 13:00 on Sundays); named after the mountaineer who first climbed the Watzmann’s east face
- Bergstüberl — a rustic dining room serving hot-stone dinners on a 300 °C stone in summer and meat or cheese fondue beside the tiled stove in winter
- Lobby Lounge & Kaminbar — a lobby café for homemade cakes, chocolate creations and speciality coffee, turning into a bar in the evening with more than 300 spirits, classic and signature cocktails and the house Berchtesgaden Mule
Swimming
The indoor pool at Kempinski The Spa measures 15 × 9 m and is heated to 29 °C, with a garden of sun loungers alongside in the warmer months. It is open daily from morning to evening, and children under 16 swim with an accompanying adult.
Skiing
Experienced skiers can set off from the door: the nearest slope, on natural snow only, is about 50 m from the hotel. A small ski area five minutes away by car suits families and beginners, with a children’s practice slope served by T-bar, platter, rope and baby lifts. Instructors from the Berchtesgaden winter sports school advise guests in the lobby on lessons in skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and ski touring, and the hotel has a ski room and rents skis, sledges and snowshoes.
Pets
Pets are welcome for a one-off room-cleaning fee, and dogs are given a blanket and a bowl. Leads are required throughout the hotel and grounds. Animals may join their owners in the Lobby Lounge & Kaminbar but are not allowed in the restaurants, on their terraces or in the spa.
