Grand Hotel Heiligendamm

About this hotel

General information

Grand Hotel Heiligendamm occupies a white ensemble on the Baltic shore at Heiligendamm, Germany’s oldest seaside resort, founded in 1793. Its classicist bathhouses and lodging houses were built between 1793 and 1870 and still read as a single architectural composition, set into a coastline of beech woods and parkland.

Rooms and suites are spread across several houses. In Haus Mecklenburg, the original bathhouse of 1796, every room looks out to sea; the 1816 Kurhaus, fronted by a temple-like colonnade, holds the ballroom and restaurants; the neo-Gothic Burg Hohenzollern, all turrets and battlements, dates from 1845–1848; and Haus Grand Hotel of 1874 closes the horseshoe-shaped square that opens towards the water. The one modern building, Severin Palais, houses a 3,000 m² spa and a large roof terrace, and a villa of its own is given over to the children’s club.

Location

The hotel sits directly on the beach of the Bay of Mecklenburg, between Bad Doberan and Kühlungsborn and close to Rostock: Wittenbeck is 4 km away, Bad Doberan 8 km, Kühlungsborn 9 km and Rostock’s main station 20 km. From Bad Doberan station (about 7 km, roughly 10 minutes by taxi) the historic Molli narrow-gauge railway runs right up to the hotel’s door. Rostock-Laage is the nearest airport at about 60 km (around 50 minutes); Lübeck airport is 105 km (about 1 hour 20 minutes), Hamburg Airport 176 km (about 2 hours 15 minutes) and Berlin Brandenburg (BER) 277 km (about 3 hours). Reception arranges limousine or coach transfers and helicopter charters, with a landing pad on the grounds and another about 1 km away; private aircraft can use Rerik-Zweedorf airfield, some 20 km away. Valet parking includes an underground garage.

Spa

Heiligendamm SPA & SPORTS fills 3,000 m² of the Severin Palais. It has an 11 × 18 m indoor pool at 28–30 °C with massage jets and neck showers, a 3 m whirlpool at 35–37 °C, and a sauna area with a Finnish sauna (90 °C), a bio sauna (60 °C), an ice room, a sauna courtyard and a relaxation room, plus a separate Finnish sauna for women. Treatments range from classic and acupressure massages, Ayurveda, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Nui, Polynesian rituals and hot stones to La Prairie and Thalgo facials, marine-based body treatments, hand and foot care, rituals for two, and a dedicated menu for children, expectant mothers and men. The spa bar serves juices, smoothies and light snacks and leads onto the roof terrace with its views of the sea.

Sports & leisure

The pools and gym are open daily from 7 am to 10 pm, and the hotel offers Hatha yoga and Ayurveda sessions. Two tennis courts with coaching for beginners and experienced players are a few minutes’ walk away. Bikes and e-bikes can be hired, with route suggestions along the cliffs, avenues and lakes of the coast, and horse rides are arranged through riding stables in Diedrichshagen and the surrounding area. In season the surf and kite school right in front of the hotel teaches windsurfing, kitesurfing and stand-up paddling, while speedboats, sailing yachts and catamarans with a skipper leave from Kühlungsborn. Golfers have Ostsee Golf Resort Wittenbeck (the par-72 Eikhof championship course and the nine-hole Höstingen), Warnemünde, WINSTONgolf, Schloss Teschow and Strelasund within reach; for Wittenbeck the hotel books tee times and arranges a transfer. On site there is boccia, croquet, kubb, table tennis, table football and billiards.

For children

A whole villa belongs to the children’s club, whose mascot is Paul the polar bear. It is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm for children aged three and over, with no booking needed; under-threes are welcome with an adult. Each of its three floors is a themed world: the Savanne for painting, crafts and shared meals, with a quiet dream room for stories; the sporty Western City with a climbing wall and a large tube slide straight into the garden; and the Space Shuttle with games consoles, books, board games and a small cinema. The garden has swings, a sandpit, ride-on cars and a table-tennis table. Lunch is served in the club at 12.30 pm, the pool keeps children’s swimming hours from 11 am to 6 pm, and the spa has treatments for young guests. Babysitters can be arranged, and games for the room, a handcart for outings and beach toys are lent out.

Restaurants & bars

Dining runs from a gourmet restaurant to a seasonal beach bar.

  • Friedrich Franz — the gourmet restaurant in the historic Kurhaus: ten tables for 26 guests, hand-painted silk wall coverings and crystal chandeliers, with modern maritime cooking built around fish and shellfish; dinner Wednesday to Saturday
  • Kurhaus Restaurant — seasonal regional cooking, 80 seats inside and 150 on a sea-view terrace; also the setting for the breakfast buffet
  • Baltic Sushi Bar — sushi, sashimi and Japanese dishes prepared in front of guests, with sake and Japanese beers and a terrace facing the sunset
  • Nelson Bar — a classic bar in Haus Grand Hotel with wood panelling, oil paintings, leather armchairs and a terrace above the sea: pastries from the in-house patisserie, lunch and dinner, afternoon tea, cocktails and live music at weekends
  • Spa Bar — juices, smoothies and light snacks in the Severin Palais
  • Food Truck — seasonal dishes on the pool terrace in summer
  • Beach Club — wicker beach chairs, lounge seating, drinks and music on the sand in summer
Swimming

The beach lies directly in front of the ensemble and shelves gently into the sea; in summer the Beach Club sets out wicker beach chairs (Strandkörbe). The heated 9 × 22.5 m outdoor pool, 0.8–1.35 m deep, opens seasonally and depending on the weather, while the 11 × 18 m indoor pool and its whirlpool are open daily from 7 am to 10 pm.

Pets

Dogs are accepted only when registered in advance and confirmed in writing, as a limited number of dog-friendly rooms is available, all in Haus Mecklenburg and Haus Grand Hotel. For a fee the hotel provides a basket, blanket and bowls, and a dog-sitter can be arranged. Dogs are welcome in the Nelson Bar, the lobby and on the Kurhaus Restaurant terrace, but not in the gourmet restaurant, the Severin Palais with its pools or on the hotel beach; a dedicated dog beach is close by.
