General information
Hotel Bareiss is a family-run resort in Mitteltal, part of Baiersbronn in the northern Black Forest. What began as a modest village inn has grown into an estate of its own: a main building, a separate Country House set in greenery and linked to the hotel by a covered passage, a large wellness area, a forest park and a dedicated children’s village. The hotel is a member of Relais & Châteaux and still runs on a strong sense of family hospitality.
Bareiss is best known for its food and for the way it looks after families. The gourmet Restaurant Bareiss is its culinary centrepiece, two further à la carte restaurants sit alongside it, and the signature Bareiss half-board stretches from early-morning coffee to a midnight snack. The pools, sauna world, gym, library, games house and a weekly programme for adults and children are all part of the stay. Rooms are furnished either in a contemporary Black Forest style or with French country charm, and no two are alike.
Location
The hotel lies in Mitteltal, Baiersbronn, in the northern Black Forest, close to the Black Forest National Park, with a network of some 550 km of footpaths starting at its door. The nearest railway station is Baiersbronn, where the hotel will send a chauffeur or arrange a taxi on request; a door-to-door chauffeur service can also collect guests from home and take them back. By car, the A5 motorway leads to the Achern exit. The hotel has a garage, carports and 16 charging points for electric and hybrid vehicles.
Spa
Bareiss Beauty & Spa brings together cosmetics and massage studios, a hairdresser, the pools, the sauna world and the gym. Treatments include Ayurveda, partial and full-body massage, fascia and deep-tissue work, foot reflexology, lymphatic drainage and herbal pouch massage, with dedicated massages for children and teens from seven. The sauna world offers:
- a Finnish sauna (90 °C), a bio-sauna and a sanarium (60 °C), a herbal steam bath and a rose steam bath (42 °C);
- an indoor whirlpool, a 15 °C plunge pool and a Kneipp walking pool;
- two outdoor whirlpools and a sauna garden with loungers;
- a Fireplace Lounge and a quiet room;
- a separate ladies’ sauna and a family sauna, open daily from noon to 3 p.m.
The sauna world is open daily from 7.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. and is textile-free; children are admitted only during family sauna hours.
Sports & leisure
From Monday to Saturday the hotel runs free taster classes for all levels — water gymnastics, stretching, HIIT, cross and functional training, back exercises and Jacobsen progressive muscle relaxation — and personal training can be arranged. Also on offer:
- an air-conditioned gym with Technogym cardio equipment and a Kinesis system;
- guided hikes and themed hiking weeks on the trails of Baiersbronn and the Black Forest National Park;
- the Bareiss Aktiv bike station with e-bikes for hire, children’s bikes and trailers, and free helmets and locks;
- a joint-friendly hard tennis court, free in the warmer months, and indoor courts at the Baiersbronn Tennis Club in winter;
- the affiliated 18-hole Freudenstadt Golf Club and other courses nearby, including Baden-Baden, with tee times and lessons booked by the hotel;
- boccia with a trainer, the hotel’s own riding stables with an arena, and a small animal park with rabbits, goats, ponies and fallow deer;
- cookery courses, wine-cellar tours and tastings, readings and classical concerts, plus angling and fly-fishing, and weeks for classic-car enthusiasts.
For children
The Bareiss Children’s Village caters to three age groups: Minis (3–6) play in the two-storey Villa Kunterbunt with its pillow room and ball pool, Maxis (7–11) cook in the children’s kitchen at Villa Sternenstaub, and Teens (12 and over) have the B-Club youth club in the House of Games, with billiards, table tennis, games consoles and film nights. Around them are a treehouse, an adventure playground with a pirate ship and trampoline, and a water playground with sluices and water wheels in the forest park. During school holidays the village is open daily from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.; at other times until 6 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and bank-holiday weekends. Joining in is voluntary and most of the programme is free.
For children under three, experienced babysitters can be arranged, and cots, bottle warmers, potties, baby baths and socket covers are available on request. A children’s lunch table is laid at Villa Sternenstaub from noon to 2 p.m. During the holidays, five-day camps cover tennis, football (ages 6–12), ponies and riding, dance and cooking (from age 7, up to 10 children).
Restaurants & bars
The Bareiss half-board runs from coffee and snacks at the Pool Bistro at 7 a.m. through a breakfast buffet from 8 to 11.30 a.m., afternoon cakes and dinner from 7 p.m. to a midnight snack in the bar. The venues:
- Restaurant Bareiss — gourmet restaurant serving refined international cuisine focused on clarity of taste and natural flavours;
- Kaminstube — traditional classics with international influences, set by an open fire in Provençal colours, with a summer terrace overlooking the valley;
- Dorfstuben — Black Forest and Swabian cooking in two original 19th-century farmhouse parlours, one lined with cuckoo clocks;
- six hotel guest restaurants, among them the Wintergarten and the summer Hotelterrasse — dinner on half-board;
- Hotel Bar — cocktails, whisky, rum and regional fruit brandies, with a pianist and dancing;
- Smokers’ Lounge — an English-style room with leather armchairs, an open fire, cigars and a collection of single malts and rums;
- Pool Bistro — a light early breakfast and snacks through the day in the pool area;
- Wine Cellar — more than 1,000 wines, with the emphasis on Baden and Württemberg, and tastings with the sommelier;
- Forellenhof Buhlbach — the Forellenstube and Buhlbachstube restaurants and a sun deck at the hotel’s own trout farm, about 7 km away;
- Sattelei — a hiking cabin at 706 m, about 45 minutes’ walk away, serving Baden and Swabian dishes on a large terrace.
Nearby, the Morlokhof — a historic farmstead built in 1789, with a vegetable and herb garden, orchards and beehives — opens only for events, including a Thursday dinner with tales from the farm’s past.
Swimming
The pool area combines freshwater and seawater:
- an indoor freshwater pool of 16 × 6 m (28 °C) and an indoor seawater pool (34 °C);
- an outdoor seawater leisure pool with a flow channel, massage jets and floor whirl jets (34 °C, all year);
- an outdoor freshwater pool with 18 m lengths, in the warmer months (24–26 °C);
- a natural bathing pool with a sunbathing lawn, a whirlpool (38 °C) and a children’s paddling pool (36 °C).
Free aqua-fitness classes take place every morning in the indoor seawater pool.
Skiing
In winter, Baiersbronn and its surroundings have eight lifts with easy and intermediate slopes well suited to beginners and families, plus courses for children and adults and equipment hire. Cross-country skiers have 72 km of trails, and the centre at Obertal-Buhlbach is floodlit until 10 p.m. There are also three toboggan runs served by lift, snowshoe hikes and curling in the hotel’s forest park.
Pets
Dogs are welcome by prior arrangement (not in every room category) and with their own basket; bowls, treats and a towel wait in the room, there is a dog shower by the hotel, and the kitchen offers five dog menus. Inside the hotel dogs must be on a lead and may not enter the guest restaurants, the bar, the sport and wellness areas or the recreation rooms. Dog-sitting is available on request.
Rooms
Rooms, apartments and suites are spread between the main building — including the Penthouse floor with views over the Mitteltal valley and the Black Forest — and the Country House, whose interiors lean towards either Baroque or classic cottage style. Rooms are booked by category, with a specific room type guaranteed for stays of four nights or more; the Bareiss half-board is included. All rooms are non-smoking, and allergy-friendly rooms are available.
Flat-screen TV with Sky, radio, safe, minibar, telephone (also in the bathroom), free internet, hairdryer, bathrobe, beach bag and slippers, plus daily fruit, fresh flowers, quality toiletries and a spa bag.
