Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt

About this hotel

General information

Althoff Seehotel Überfahrt sits right on the shore of Lake Tegernsee in Rottach-Egern, with the Bavarian foothills of the Alps rising beyond the water. Part of the Althoff Collection, it has a look of its own called Elegant Nature: Alpine design in wood, leather, linen and cashmere, warm colours and wide windows that pull lake and mountains into the rooms. There are 174 rooms and suites, each with its own balcony or terrace.

The story begins in 1873, when an inn named after the lake crossing opened on this shore, and a traditional Bavarian boat still pulls in at the hotel’s landing stage to ferry guests across to the Egerner Bucht. Today people come for the food – a gastronomic restaurant cooking partly with its own produce, Italian and Alpine dining rooms, a lakeside hut – and for the 4 elements spa, 3,000 m² of pools, saunas and private treatment suites with its own way into the lake. The hotel is open all year.

Location

The hotel stands in Rottach-Egern on Lake Tegernsee, beside the Egerner Bucht, about 45 minutes’ drive (60 km) from Munich. Munich Airport is 95 km away, Salzburg and its airport 126 km, the nearest motorway 30 km; the nearest ski area is 8 km off and the nearest golf course 6 km. Guests receive a card for free travel on public transport around the Tegernsee Valley, and those arriving by car have the hotel’s own underground garage with 110 spaces and electric-vehicle chargers.

Spa

The 4 elements spa by Althoff covers 3,000 m² and takes its cue from earth, water, air and fire. Water means a 28-metre indoor pool, a hot pool, a heated 17-metre outdoor pool with whirlpool in summer, a children’s pool and a plunge pool in the sauna area. Heat comes from a Finnish sauna (90 °C), a clay bio sauna (55 °C), a herbal sauna (65 °C), a steam bath (42 °C) and an event sauna with rotating infusions, with the Silence Lounge and fireside relaxation rooms with a library for resting in between. Massages, facials and body rituals are tailored to each guest and given in private spa suites of at least 38 m², each with its own bathroom and relaxation area. THE BISTRO serves light seasonal food inside the spa, and the shop stocks Ligne St Barth, Dr. Hauck, Julisis and myBlend. Pools and saunas are open to hotel guests daily from 7am to 8pm and are included in the stay; treatments are charged separately.

Sports & leisure

The gym in the spa never closes: Technogym equipment, two Peloton bikes, a rowing machine, a barbell, dumbbells from 1 to 22 kg and Reformer Pilates machines. A daily changing programme covers back, fascia and core training, the Five Tibetan Rites, stretching, mat and Reformer Pilates and Nordic walking along the shore, and personal trainers can be booked. A jogging station in the lobby is stocked with mountain spring water and fresh fruit. Five golf clubs lie 20–35 minutes away by car, among them Tegernseer Golf-Club Bad Wiessee and Golf Club Margarethenhof am Tegernsee. The Guest Relations team arranges sailing, electric boat trips on the lake, windsurfing and stand-up paddling, marked mountain-bike routes, hiking and climbing in the Alpine foothills, paragliding, hot-air balloon flights, tennis and horse-drawn carriage rides. The Genusswerkstatt cookery studio hosts private dinners cooked in front of guests, and a pianist plays in the lobby.

For children

The Kids Club is open every day from 10am to 4pm for play, crafts and discovery while parents take time for themselves. Younger guests have their own breakfast buffet, a children’s pool in the spa, children’s bathrobes, slippers and toiletries, and a cot with baby essentials in the room on request. All restaurants have children’s menus, games can be borrowed at reception, there is a varied children’s programme plus a Kids Active Programme at extra cost, and babysitters can be arranged. Children up to and including five stay free in their parents’ room, and interconnecting rooms are available. Ski schools nearby run courses for children, and in summer the team can set up sailing lessons, riding lessons and cycling tours for the whole family.

Restaurants & bars

Breakfast is included in every stay, and the Dine-Around option gives guests a three-course à la carte lunch or dinner each day in one of four restaurants:

  • Restaurant Überfahrt – gastronomic restaurant with cosmopolitan, creative cooking built on regional produce, some of it home-grown, and menus that follow the cycle of nature; dinner Wednesday to Saturday;
  • Il Barcaiolo – northern Italian cooking: home-made focaccia, fresh pasta, saltimbocca, and lunch on a terrace overlooking the lake;
  • Egerner Bucht – Alpine cuisine from regional produce with a view across the bay, serving the breakfast buffet in the morning and a salad buffet with a three-course menu at night;
  • Fährhütte14 – a lakeside hut in a nature reserve serving globally inspired sea-and-land cooking;
  • Überfahrer Bar – cocktails, champagne, coffee, cakes from the in-house patisserie and light dishes, a lake-view terrace in summer and live music at weekends;
  • THE BISTRO – light, balanced seasonal food inside the spa;
  • Genusswerkstatt – a cookery studio for private dining, with dishes prepared in front of guests.

Room service offers hot and cold dishes and desserts.

Swimming

In the summer months the hotel opens a private beach on Lake Tegernsee right next to the building, reserved for hotel guests from 7am to 8pm, with a sunbathing lawn, loungers and a beach service for drinks and food. The 28-metre indoor pool and the hot pool are there all year, joined in summer by the heated 17-metre outdoor pool with whirlpool, while families have a sheltered area with its own children’s pool.

Skiing

The nearest ski area is 8 km away, with three ski and snowboard areas in the vicinity and ski courses for children. Around the Tegernsee Valley there are more than 100 km of groomed cross-country trails, a long natural toboggan run, ski tours to the surrounding summits, snowshoe hikes, horse-drawn sleigh rides, curling and ice skating.

Pets

Dogs are welcome in specially equipped rooms (not in the Maisonette Lake View Suite). The kitchen cooks a dog menu of boiled turkey or beef with vegetables and rice, delivered by a dedicated dog room service, and reception has bowls on request. The hotel’s partner LakeDogs provides dog-sitting by trained dog trainers, and the team has mapped out its own walking routes through the valley. Dogs are not allowed in the restaurants, the garden, the spa or on the beach, and are kept on a lead in the grounds.
