Tikehau

Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts

About this hotel

General information

Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts occupies a motu on Tikehau atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago: a pink-sand coral islet covered in wild coconut grove, with a tropical garden tucked behind it. The atoll itself is the coral crown of an ancient submarine volcano, and its name in the Tuamotu language translates as “peaceful landing”. The hotel belongs to the Pearl Resorts of Tahiti collection and is a member of Relais & Châteaux.

The bungalows and suites follow traditional Polynesian building: pandanus-leaf roofs, bamboo, teak and niau, the woven coconut frond that serves as the islands’ emblematic material. Some sit directly on the beach, others on stilts above the lagoon with glass panels set into the floor for watching marine life below. An infinity pool anchors the resort, with Kaina Bar and Poreho restaurant beside it, but the real draw is the lagoon itself – snorkelling, diving and boat trips to deserted motu.

Location

Tikehau lies in the Pacific Ocean, some 354 km north of Tahiti; the Air Tahiti flight from Faa’a International Airport on Tahiti takes about 50 minutes. The hotel stands on Motu Tianoa, a 15-minute boat ride from the atoll’s village.

Spa

Fare Massage by Tāvai Spa centres on taurumi, the ancestral Polynesian massage at the heart of traditional island medicine. Body, face and hair rituals rely on natural products and Polynesian monoï oil, while massages and scrubs draw on tiare flowers, white sand, Taha’a vanilla and tropical fruit. Treatments are available daily by appointment.

Sports & leisure
  • Kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear, free for guests
  • Snorkelling and diving in a lagoon rich in marine life, boat trips to nearby motu, sunset cruises and private picnics
  • Birdwatching on Bird Island; with Manu, the Polynesian ornithological society, the hotel protects nesting sites of endemic and migratory birds
  • Fishing excursions, visits to the village and the atoll’s well-known fish traps
  • Introductions to Polynesian traditions through talks and demonstrations
  • Infinity pool and fitness centre; the concierge arranges excursions, including private ones
For children

Children are welcome. The Beach Bungalow, Overwater Suite and Horizon Overwater Suite sleep two adults and two children under 13, and the Royal Beach Villa with Pool takes up to six guests, while the overwater bungalows are for up to three adults.

Restaurants & bars

Two restaurants and a bar make up the dining, and romantic dinners on the pink-sand beach or private picnics on a motu can be arranged on request.

  • Poreho – open lagoon views and a menu blending Polynesian and European flavours from fresh local produce; breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Te Reka Ika – evening seafood restaurant set among sand and rocks: the day’s catch from the Tikehau lagoon, a fisherman’s pot in the spirit of bouillabaisse and a menu that changes daily; its own bar, reservations required
  • Kaina Bar – an intimate spot for tropical cocktails before and after dinner
  • Room Service – meals in the bungalow or on the terrace during restaurant hours, plus the Canoe Breakfast, delivered across the lagoon by canoe
Swimming

The hotel has a pink-sand beach on the lagoon and an infinity pool. Beach Bungalows open straight onto the sand, and most overwater bungalows and suites have steps from the terrace into the lagoon. The exception is the Overwater Bungalows on the first pontoon: they stand over the hoa, a shallow channel through the atoll’s coral rim where currents run, so they have no direct water access.
