About this hotel
General information
Grand Hotel des Alpes was built in 1840 by the Couttet family, who believed in Chamonix’s future at a time when the town had only begun to grow after Dr Paccard and Balmat first reached the summit of Mont Blanc in 1787. It soon became one of the valley’s best-known hotels, popular with mountaineers and European aristocrats alike. Its heyday began after the First World War, when Aline Couttet extended the building with an “old” tower, and lasted until the 1980s; after a decade’s pause the hotel reopened.
Today there are 30 rooms, a wave pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna, a steam room, massage rooms, a breakfast room and a cosy fireside bar, along with a meeting room for 30, a library with a large DVD collection and a garage. Chamonix’s shops, casino, cafés and restaurants are right outside.
Location
The hotel is on rue du Docteur Paccard in the centre of Chamonix, steps from shops, cafés and the casino.
Spa
There is a wave pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna and a steam room, with relaxing, Ayurvedic and Korean massage available.
Sports & leisure
Chamonix is the world capital of mountain sports. In winter there is downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and sledging; in summer mountain biking, canoeing, rafting and an 18-hole golf course in Argentière. Cable cars rise to the peaks around the valley — the Aiguille du Midi, Le Brévent and La Flégère — for sweeping views of the Alps.
Restaurants & bars
There is no restaurant for dinner. A breakfast buffet is served in a painted breakfast room, and evenings are spent in the bar by the fire or on the open terrace facing Mont Blanc.
Skiing
The cable cars to the Aiguille du Midi, Le Brévent and La Flégère are easily reached from the town centre. The hotel has a ski and boot room, and several shops a few steps away sell and rent ski equipment.
