Waldorf Astoria Helsinki

About this hotel

General information

Waldorf Astoria Helsinki occupies neo-Renaissance buildings of 1885 in the historic Kruununhaka district, a short walk from Senate Square and Market Square. The buildings are protected by the Finnish Heritage Agency, so their staircases, façades and original architectural details have been carefully preserved, while the interiors pair that heritage with restrained contemporary design. A signature of the house is its 159 chandeliers, hung throughout the rooms, salons and corridors.

Hotel life gathers around the inner courtyard: the glass-enclosed Lilja Terrace becomes a winter garden when the snow falls and opens onto the courtyard in summer. Alongside are the Peacock Bar for cocktails and Varjo, a restaurant serving modern European cuisine. The Waldorf Astoria Spa is built on the Finnish rhythm of heat, steam and cold, centred on a glass-roofed atrium. For events there is a ballroom for up to 80 guests, smaller salons and the courtyard for cocktail receptions.

Location

The hotel stands at Mariankatu 23 in Kruununhaka, a quiet, walkable district of Helsinki’s historic centre. Helsinki Cathedral, Senate Square and the city centre are all about 1 km away, and Market Square is a few minutes on foot. Helsinki Airport (Helsinki-Vantaa) is 20 km away. There is street parking nearby, and the hotel offers paid valet parking, which must be reserved at least 24 hours before arrival.

Spa

The Waldorf Astoria Spa is rooted in Finnish sauna culture, with a Finnish sauna, an aromatic steam room with individual reclining seats, a cold bucket shower, an experience pool with underwater music, a hot tub, a cold plunge pool and several relaxation areas. At its heart is the glass-roofed Atrium, with daybeds, a fountain, a fireplace and the Atrium Bar. Four treatment rooms offer Biologique Recherche and Niki Newd therapies: massages, facials, body treatments, rituals for two and pregnancy massage. A separate Wellness Suite hosts a private recovery programme with a neurosonic lounger, compression boots, an infrared sauna blanket and a vibration plate. The spa is open to guests aged 16 and over.

Sports & leisure

The hotel has a fitness centre, and the personal concierge arranges experiences beyond its doors:

  • a guided forest walk in Nuuksio National Park with a professional wilderness guide, with an optional lunch by an open fire
  • a private seaside sauna on the Baltic with the option of a cold-water dip; a sauna host can explain the rituals and offer natural treatments such as blueberry hair care and peat masks
  • a bespoke walk with a local guide through Helsinki’s architecture, design and history
  • a private archipelago cruise on a chartered boat with Champagne and light bites, with a stop on one of the islands
For children

Babysitting can be arranged on request, and the spa offers a parent-and-child ritual in the double treatment room, with a choice of a calming massage, a light facial or a mini manicure.

Restaurants & bars

The restaurant, bar and terrace are gathered around the inner courtyard:

  • Varjo — modern European cuisine with Finnish influences and seasonal ingredients; it also hosts private events with tailored menus, and the secluded Valley room suits more intimate dinners
  • Peacock Bar — the hotel’s intimate bar, serving daily lunch, small bites, classic bar dishes and cocktails with a Finnish touch; adults only (18+) from 4 pm
  • Lilja Terrace — a glass-enclosed terrace overlooking the courtyard, with à la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner, and afternoon tea on Saturdays with pastries, sandwiches, scones, fine teas and Champagne
  • Atrium Bar — a bar in the spa atrium for a drink before or after a treatment

In-room dining is available around the clock.

Swimming

The Waldorf Astoria Spa has an indoor experience pool with underwater music, set beside a hot tub and a cold plunge pool for Finnish-style contrast bathing.

Pets

Small dogs of up to 10 kg are welcome for a fee in a limited number of rooms, and the hotel can arrange pet care. Dogs are not allowed in the spa, gym, bar or restaurant and must be kept on a lead in public areas. Service animals are also welcome.
