About this hotel
General information
Skýra Retreat is a small, secluded hideaway on the shore of Lake Norvajärvi in Finnish Lapland, just outside Rovaniemi and close to the Arctic Circle. At its centre stands a village schoolhouse from the early 1950s, built of logs felled in the surrounding forest. Local craftsmen spent nearly three years uncovering its original log walls by hand, and the protected building now houses the restaurant, a wellness room and some of the rooms. Eight log cabins are set among the pines around it, with a single villa at the water’s edge.
There are only 15 rooms. The idea is luxury pared back to essentials – heat and cold, silence, good food and unhurried time rather than a crowded itinerary. Every day there is morning yoga, a guided Folklore Sauna ritual and an evening sound bath for all guests, and the Nordic Spa sits on the lakeshore. With barely any light pollution, the northern lights may be seen from the grounds or out on the frozen lake. Skýra is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and its Wellbeing Collection.
Location
The retreat lies in forest on Lake Norvajärvi, north-west of Rovaniemi – about 20 km, or roughly 20 minutes by car, from both the city centre and Rovaniemi Airport. Private transfers from the airport, Rovaniemi railway station or hotels within 15 km of the city are arranged by the retreat for every stay.
Spa
The Nordic Spa stands right on the lakeshore, a short walk from the main building, and follows the Finnish cycle of heat, cold and rest. The spa building has separate changing rooms for women and men, a quiet lounge, a treatment room for massages and therapies, and a first, intimate sauna. Beyond it the spaces open towards the lake: outdoor hot tubs, a cold plunge pool, direct access for a lake swim and, in winter, a hole cut in the ice. A second sauna sits at the water’s edge behind a floor-to-ceiling window, and between rounds guests rest on a large terrace with a firepit, built around trees that grow up through the decking. A sauna host leads the daily Folklore Sauna ritual of steam, story and an old sauna incantation; it can also be booked privately with birch whisking and a cold plunge. Private yoga (Hatha, Yin, Vinyasa or Somatic), Pilates, meditation, live violin or drum relaxation and couples’ yoga are available on request.
Sports & leisure
Alongside the daily programme of morning yoga, the sauna ritual and an evening sound bath, the retreat runs its own outings straight from the grounds: ice fishing on frozen Lake Norvajärvi, reached by snowmobile-drawn sleigh, a daytime snowmobile safari through forest and frozen bogland, and an evening ride under the Arctic sky (drivers must be 18 or over with a driving licence valid in the EU). Forest trails for walks and snowshoeing start at the door.
- In winter: husky and reindeer sleigh rides, northern lights tours, cross-country and downhill skiing, ice floating, a private visit from Santa Claus, and northern lights flights by private jet.
- In the snowless season: hiking, kayaking, fatbike and e-fatbike tours, foraging, reindeer farm visits and midnight sun outings.
- Everything is arranged by the concierge team with trusted local guides, either as shared departures or privately for couples, families and small groups.
For children
Private family yoga sessions, built around movement stories and play, are offered for children aged 3–10 and their adults; the concierge can arrange family outings and a visit from Santa, and childcare through partners is available for villa guests.
Restaurants & bars
The restaurant fills the schoolhouse’s old kitchen and former gymnasium, with log walls, chandeliers and around 35 seats. Its cooking pairs Nordic produce with classic French technique. Breakfast is à la carte and served at the table; the day brings a relaxed lunch menu and afternoon coffee with Finnish pastries (pullakahvit), and the evening a seasonal three-course dinner, with much of it made in-house. The bar team makes its own cordials, infusions and washed spirits for cocktails and alcohol-free drinks, sharing ingredients with the kitchen to cut waste. Room service runs around the clock.
Swimming
There is no conventional pool: guests swim in Lake Norvajärvi straight from the Nordic Spa, and in winter through a hole cut in the ice. The spa also has outdoor hot tubs and a cold plunge pool, while the lakeside villa has its own sauna and private ice hole.
Skiing
The retreat has no slopes of its own; the concierge arranges cross-country and downhill skiing, including private ski trips, and snowshoe routes lead into the forest from the grounds.
Pets
Small Luxury Hotels of the World lists the retreat as pet-friendly; the details are best agreed with the hotel in advance.
