Namale Resort & Spa

About this hotel

General information

Namale Resort & Spa spreads across 525 acres of rainforest and shoreline on the south coast of Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second-largest island. It sits on volcanic cliffs above the Koro Sea, and its grounds take in waterfalls, reef tidepools, coral close to shore and an organic farm that supplies the kitchens. The resort is for adults only, with every guest aged 18 or over, and keeps a ratio of four staff to each guest.

Twenty-two bures and villas are scattered through the gardens and along the cliffs, most of them freestanding with no shared walls. A bure is the traditional Fijian thatched-roof house; here each carries its own name drawn from the island’s nature or culture, with carved timber, high vaulted ceilings and showers built of natural stone. Stays are on an extended all-inclusive basis covering meals, drinks, most activities and nightly Fijian entertainment with village choir, dance and kava ceremonies.

Location

The resort lies on the south coast of Vanua Levu near the small town of Savusavu, overlooking the Koro Sea. Guests fly into Nadi International Airport on Viti Levu, connect to a domestic flight of about an hour to Savusavu Airport, and finish with a complimentary transfer of roughly 10 km, around 10 minutes by road. Labasa Airport is an alternative, about 90 minutes away by a scenic drive through mountains, rainforest and villages.

Spa

Valeni Sasauni Spa Sanctuary, some 10,000 sq ft (929 m²), is set into volcanic cliffs above the Koro Sea, with treatment and relaxation rooms opening to the ocean or the gardens. Its hydrotherapy area, with aromatherapy pools, a waterfall massage, hot tub, cold plunge pool and sauna, is included in the stay; treatments are charged separately. The menu runs from Swedish and deep-tissue massage to Fijian bobo, performed by therapists using their feet and overhead bars, hot stones, Ayurvedic abhyanga and swedana steam therapy, a sunset ritual for couples, banana-leaf wraps and products built on dilo nut, noni and cocoa, plus facials, manicures and pedicures on decks facing the sea.

Sports & leisure
  • Snorkelling off the shore or from the resort’s own boat, Namale Pearl, in Savusavu Bay, plus kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and hand-line fishing, all included
  • Dive Namale, a PADI 5 Star facility: dives in the Namena Marine Reserve around the islet of Namenalala and at sites such as Purple Gardens Mount and Lepper’s Wall, introductory dives for beginners, Open Water referral dives and Enriched Air Nitrox training (charged separately)
  • A rainforest hike to the resort’s own waterfall and its freshwater pools; at low tide, reef walks past tidepools to an ocean blowhole

For children

The resort is adults-only: all guests must be 18 or over.

Restaurants & bars

Breakfast, three-course lunches, dinner, snacks through the day and drinks from fresh juices to wine, beer and spirits are all included, as is unlimited in-bure dining. The cooking mixes Fijian and Indo-Fijian flavours with local catch and produce from the resort’s organic farm, on rotating menus adapted to dietary needs.

  • Lomavata — the main restaurant and bar, Fijian farm-to-table cooking for breakfast, high tea and multi-course dinners indoors or on cliffside decks; a lali drum signals the start of dinner
  • Walu Bar & Grill — a casual spot by the pool for lunch, with comfort food, Fijian-inspired dishes and a full bar
  • Private dining — in a sea cave, by the waterfall, on a hillside bluff, at the water’s edge or on the Veidomoni Deck with its heart-shaped hot tub; stays of 5–6 nights include one such breakfast or lunch, stays of 7 nights or more a breakfast, lunch or dinner of choice
Swimming

Two large freshwater pools with loungers, Lasalasa and the Dive Shop pool overlooking the bay, are open around the clock, and ocean-view hot tubs sit at Lasalasa and on the Veidomoni Deck. The resort’s beachfront has loungers, restrooms and an outdoor shower; snorkelling starts right off the coast, and low tide exposes reef tidepools full of marine life. Private pools come with the Ocean Plunge Pool Bures, Plunge Pool Villas and Grand Infinity Pool Villas.
