Kokomo Private Island Fiji

About this hotel

General information

Kokomo Private Island Fiji occupies Yaukuve Levu, an island in the Kadavu group ringed by the Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the largest barrier reefs on the planet. It was conceived as a family island: 21 villas sit directly on the sand along both shores, while five residences for extended families and groups of friends are tucked into the green hilltops. Interiors set clean contemporary lines against Fijian detailing, stonework and original pieces by the artist Chris Kenyon.

Stays are full board — à la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner in any restaurant or in the villa — with a personal bar of soft drinks and snacks restocked daily, laundry, non-motorised water sports, complimentary land-based activities and both kids’ clubs included. The kitchens rely on a 5.5-acre island farm and the surrounding waters: the edible gardens supply more than 80% of the herbs and greens used in the restaurants, and the island runs its own reef restoration programmes.

Location

Yaukuve Levu lies in the north-east of the Kadavu group, inside the Great Astrolabe Reef. The flight from Nadi International Airport takes 45–60 minutes aboard the resort’s own Twin Otter seaplane or AS350 helicopter, either on a scheduled shared transfer or as a private charter, and guests wait in the resort’s dedicated lounge at Nadi Airport before take-off. For a same-day connection the international flight should land in Nadi by 3pm; private transfers can also be arranged from elsewhere in Fiji.

Spa

Yaukuve Spa Sanctuary sits in a tropical garden with five treatment rooms, a wet and dry hammam, a hair salon and an open-air relaxation bure — a traditional thatched Fijian pavilion — where hibiscus and lemongrass-ginger teas are served between treatments. Therapies use Sodashi products. The signature Pacific Mastery massage is rooted in age-old Fijian techniques; the menu also includes a Moroccan hammam ritual, the full-body Body Revival, the Mineral Marine Repair facial with seaweed and spirulina, and hand, foot and hair care. Treatments can also be booked in the residences.

Sports & leisure

The ocean sets the pace on Yaukuve Levu, but there is plenty on land too; most land-based activities and non-motorised water sports are included in the stay.

  • Diving — four dive boats and more than 30 dive and snorkel sites on the Great Astrolabe and Solo reefs: the caverns of Grotto, the coral bommies of Wonderland, the slopes of Side Street, the walls of Corner and Rainbows End and a manta cleaning station; boat dives daily at 9am and 3pm, night dives on the house reef, a maximum of three dives a day
  • PADI courses — from the Discover Scuba Diver introduction (from 10 years) to Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver
  • Snorkelling on the house reef straight from the beach, or by speedboat out to the edges of the reef, where mantas and turtles are often seen
  • Baywatch — the activities bure on the west beach: kayaks (including a 90-minute guided paddle), stand-up paddleboarding, Hobie Cat sailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding and skurfing, banana boat and other towables, and an ocean trampoline
  • Fishing — reef and sport fishing, deep dropping to depths of 400 m with electric reels and spearfishing; three dedicated fishing boats, and the chefs will cook the catch
  • Surfing — four-hour trips aboard the Mako boat to three reef passes 45–90 minutes from the island
  • The Twilight yacht — the Astrolabe Adventure, a full or half day of snorkelling and diving on the reef, and the Starlight Dinner Cruise
  • On land — tennis courts with a resident coach, pickleball, basketball, Above Par, a golf-simulator lounge on one of the island’s highest points (up to 10 guests), a fitness centre with a Reformer Pilates and yoga studio, personal training and sunrise yoga in the Yoga Shala
  • Further afield — a picnic on uninhabited Namara island, 10 minutes away by boat, a waterfall hike via a local village, a village visit with a traditional sevusevu welcome, the kava ceremony, a farm tour and wine tastings with the sommelier
For children

The Kaji Club for younger children and the Teens Club both run daily from 9am to 9pm and are included in the stay. Little ones feed fish, ride the glass-bottom boat, go on nature walks and treasure hunts, do crafts, cooking classes, face painting and movie nights; teenagers snorkel, help with coral restoration, sail Hobie Cats and play pickleball, giant chess and table football. In the beachfront villas a nanny looks after children under 4 from 9am to 3pm, while residence guests have a dedicated house nanny throughout their stay. Children of 8–9 can try the PADI Bubblemaker programme in the pool, and from 10 they can dive on the house reef. The Three Bedroom Family Sunrise and Sunset villas are laid out with families in mind.

Restaurants & bars

Three restaurants cook with produce from the island farm and the day’s catch, and their menus change daily.

  • Beach Shack — the main restaurant on the waterfront, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with sharing dishes built on Fijian produce; next to it, the Sunset Bar for sundowners
  • Walker D'Plank — a restaurant and bar over the water beyond the arrival jetty, serving Asian-style street food with Fijian touches, from Singapore chilli lobster, sushi and sashimi to dumplings and curries; lunch and dinner, with dishes handed over by the chefs themselves
  • Kokocabana — a pool club with Italian and Mediterranean cooking from an open kitchen with a Josper grill, dry-aged meats, house-made cold cuts and wood-fired pizza, plus a Sports Lounge for live sport
  • Wine Cellar — a cellar of international wines for dinners and tastings
  • Private dining — a table anywhere on the island, a picnic on Namara, an evening cruise aboard Twilight, and every meal in the villa
Swimming

The villas sit right on the sand on both sides of the island — the east beach, which faces the sunrise, and the west beach, facing the sunset — and each has its own infinity pool and direct beach access. The house reef starts just off the shore, an ocean trampoline floats off the west beach, and the main resort pool, home to the Kokocabana pool club, is open to all guests. The hilltop residences have private infinity pools, and a private staircase leads from the Ocean Residence down to the east beach.

Rooms

The island has 21 beachfront villas in seven types, with one to three bedrooms, and five hilltop residences for 6–12 guests. Residence stays come with a dedicated house butler, nanny and buggy, a barbecue cooked by a private chef once during the stay, and return shared air transfers from Nadi.
