Nile Adventurer, an A&K Sanctuary

About this hotel

General information

Nile Adventurer is Abercrombie & Kent's small, 66 m riverboat on the Nile between Luxor and Aswan. Her sleek profile owes more to a superyacht than to a classic cruiser, and with only 30 cabins and suites across four decks she carries no more than 60 guests. The interiors take their palette from the river and the desert — apricot and bronze, soft blues and aquamarine — with dark wood, brass lamps and patterned textiles set against contemporary pieces by local artists.

Days are shaped by guided visits ashore with an Egyptologist, broken up by time on the teak Sun Deck with its pool and tented daybeds. A massage room, a library, a games room and a small shop selling Egyptian art, books and jewellery complete the picture. Full board with afternoon tea is included, as are the guided excursions on the itinerary and their entrance fees.

Location

The boat covers roughly 210 km of the Nile between Aswan and Luxor on four-night sailings in either direction, Aswan to Luxor or Luxor to Aswan, using private docks in both cities. Luxor is about an hour's flight from Cairo and Aswan about an hour and a half; private transfers take around 30 minutes from Luxor Airport and around 45 minutes from Aswan Airport to the dock.

Spa

The massage room on the Promenade Deck is a bright space finished in marble and mirrors. Treatments run from Swedish, sports and deep-tissue massage to aromatherapy and short de-stressing sessions focused on the hands, the feet, or the head, neck, face and shoulders.

Sports & leisure

Excursions with an Egyptologist go ashore twice a day: Karnak and Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, the temples of Kom Ombo and Edfu (the Temple of Horus) and the temple complex on Philae. Optional extras include a felucca sail around Elephantine Island, the Aswan spice market and a hot-air balloon flight over the Valleys of the Kings and Queens. On the Sun Deck, a treadmill and dumbbells sit in the shade by the bar, with yoga mats to hand; a library and games room are on board too.

Restaurants & bars

Meals are full board with afternoon tea; water, tea and coffee at meals and juices at breakfast are included, other drinks are charged. The cooking blends Egyptian dishes with the wider flavours of the Middle East, and on one day of the cruise the head chef runs a class on koshari and om ali before tea.

  • The restaurant, Main Deck — wood-floored dining room with Nile views and a live cooking station; buffet breakfast and lunch, à la carte dinner with two or three choices per course and one all-Egyptian evening

  • The lounge — sofas and armchairs for after-dinner drinks, with traditional music in the evenings
  • Sun Deck bar — cocktails beside the pool and cabanas
