Al Moudira Hotel

About this hotel

General information

Al Moudira is a secluded hotel on Luxor's West Bank: domes, arches and shaded courtyards set among palm groves, orchards and gardens. Local master masons built it in the traditions of Middle Eastern architecture, so the hotel unfolds as a chain of courtyards with fountains, terraces and rooftops. Inside are carved wooden doors, terracotta, painted glass from Alexandria, hand-painted tiles and frescoes, and more than 1,500 antiques and crafted pieces that recall the old houses of Egypt and the Levant.

There are 54 suites, and seven villas with their own courtyards and pools stand in the grounds. Part of the produce for the kitchens comes from the hotel's own farm, the library holds more than 7,000 books on Egypt and the Middle East, and there is a hammam spa and a fleet of vintage cars for outings around Luxor and into the desert. The hotel is a member of Relais & Châteaux.

Location

The hotel lies on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor, close to the Valley of the Kings and about 6 km from the town centre on the East Bank. Town is reached by road over the bridge or by the ferries that cross the river around the clock, and a free hotel shuttle runs into Luxor and back twice a day. The hotel's transfer from Luxor Airport takes about 30 minutes.

Spa

Al Moudira Spa is built around a traditional marble bath and a hammam under tall domes, with hand-painted tiles and antique basins, plus a sauna, a steam room and treatment rooms. Therapists from Kerala lead the massage menu — signature, hot stone, Thai, Ayurvedic, Marma, Swedish and the Pharaonic Foot Massage — alongside beauty treatments.

Sports & leisure

Days in and around the hotel are shaped to each guest's interests.

  • A main pool among the palms, long enough for laps
  • A gym with personal trainers; outdoor yoga with a resident teacher covering postures, breathing, meditation and sound
  • Sunrise at Karnak Temple, sunset on a felucca on the Nile and hot-air balloon flights
  • Visits to local craft workshops, sightseeing in Luxor and desert trips in vintage Land Rover Defenders
  • Set Nefru, the hotel's own 37-metre dahabiya — a traditional Nile sailing boat with five cabins and a full crew — for private short or longer cruises
  • A library of more than 7,000 books on Egypt and the Middle East, plus gardens, a farm and olive groves to wander
For children

Babysitting can be arranged, and the main pool has a small shallow area for young guests.

Restaurants & bars

Restaurants and bars are spread through the courtyards, gardens and pool area, and candlelit private dinners can be set up almost anywhere on the property.

  • The Ottoman Hall — dinner in a hall modelled on Ottoman palace reception rooms: Mediterranean, Asian and South American cooking with Middle Eastern touches
  • The Courtyard — relaxed open-air dining in a shaded courtyard by reception, from breakfast and coffee to lunch, aperitifs and a light dinner
  • Khan Al Moudira — a traditional Egyptian restaurant and café filled with antiques, looking onto a courtyard with a marble fountain
  • The Moudira Farm Kitchen — seasonal dishes from the hotel's farm at lunch or dinner, indoors or under a large tent amid greenery
  • Shahrazade — a room for private dinners and celebrations, its interior inspired by 1930s Cairo
  • The Eastern Bar — a cocktail bar for the aperitivo hour, with jazz and blues
  • The Pool Bar and Il Forno — pavilions by the pool in the palm grove: wood-fired pizza, bruschetta on shamsi bread and drinks at the Mashrabiya Bar
Swimming

The main pool is framed by palms, with the bar and pavilions alongside; it is long enough for lap swimming and has a small shallow area for children. The six villa pools are occasionally opened to guests staying elsewhere in the hotel.
