About this hotel
General information
Tortuga Bay is the most intimate address at Puntacana Resort & Club in Punta Cana: 13 villas on a white-sand shoreline holding just 30 suites and villas. It occupies a private, gated enclave of the resort with its own beach, pool and Jacuzzi reserved for its guests, belongs to The Leading Hotels of the World and holds the AAA Five Diamond award.
The interiors are the work of Dominican-born Oscar de la Renta — pared-back and elegant, with locally sourced materials, coralline stone bathrooms and oak walk-in closets. Every guest is assigned a personal Embajador, a dedicated concierge who handles the stay from the airport welcome to booking tennis or excursions. Electric golf carts and bicycles are provided for getting around the resort, and the Ojos Indígenas reserve, some 1,500 acres of protected forest, lies close by.
Location
The hotel sits within a private section of Puntacana Resort & Club on the Caribbean coast in the east of the Dominican Republic, a short drive from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). Arrivals are met with a VIP service through immigration and customs, use of the airport’s VIP lounge and a private round-trip transfer to the villa.
Spa
The Spa is housed in La Cana Golf & Beach Club, with nine treatment rooms, with treatments for couples as well as individuals, a sauna, steam room, outdoor pool, indoor and outdoor relaxation areas, an ice fountain and a cold bucket shower. The menu covers massages, among them the Punta Cana Signature Massage, facials and body treatments built on local ingredients such as coconut, sea grape, cocoa and sugar cane, alongside yoga (aerial included), reformer Pilates, meditation and gong sound healing. Guests must be 12 or older.
Sports & leisure
The resort offers 45 holes of championship golf: P.B. Dye’s 27-hole La Cana, with sea views from 14 holes, and Tom Fazio’s 18-hole Corales, which finishes at the Devil’s Elbow with a dramatic carry over a cliff-lined bay. Tortuga Bay has its own fitness centre, with personal classes on request.
- Oscar de la Renta Tennis Center — clay, Har-Tru, grass and hard courts, plus padel and pickleball courts and a Technogym
- water sports: snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding; a PADI Five Star dive centre with wreck dives; IKO-certified kiteboarding lessons on Playa Blanca
- an equestrian centre and the Puntacana Polo Club, with lessons for every level
- 22 km of cycling trails, guided walks in the Ojos Indígenas reserve and its 12 freshwater lagoons, birdwatching and visits to the coral restoration centre
- excursions: Segway eco-tours, helicopter flights and sunset cruises
For children
Children are welcome, with cots and high chairs for the youngest and a children’s menu at Bamboo. Tortuga Bay has no kids’ club of its own, but guests can use the resort’s kids’ club. Near the equestrian centre there is a petting farm with a playground, and pony rides are offered.
Restaurants & bars
The hotel has two restaurants and a lounge overseen by chef Cristian Shinya, a Chilean of Japanese descent; further venues are spread across the resort, and in-room dining runs around the clock.
- Bamboo — Mediterranean-leaning cooking with local produce in an Oscar de la Renta setting, vegetables from the resort’s organic gardens; breakfast, lunch and dinner
- La Yola — Mediterranean and Caribbean seafood in a restaurant shaped like a fishing boat, set over the water at the resort marina, with a glass panel onto the sea life below
- Tortuga Bay Lounge — poolside evenings with hand-rolled cigars, sipping rums and local bites; afternoon English tea
- Mare — coastal Italian seafood and pizza on the beach
- Bao — Pan-Asian sharing plates
- Brassa Grill — steakhouse with a charcoal grill
- Playa Blanca — beach restaurant and bar serving seafood and grilled meats
- Los Platanos Bar and Don Queco Cigar Bar — Dominican rums and cigars
Swimming
Tortuga Bay has its own white-sand beach, reserved for hotel guests and watched by lifeguards, as well as a pool and an outdoor Jacuzzi. The wider resort runs to some three miles of beaches; Playa Blanca, with flat, waist-deep water, is where kiteboarders learn.
