Casa de Campo Resort & Villas

About this hotel

General information

Casa de Campo Resort & Villas spreads across some 7,000 acres of the Dominican Republic’s south-east coast, just outside La Romana. The land was once a sugar plantation; in the 1970s part of it became a private retreat for corporate guests, and it has since grown into one of the best-known resort addresses in the Caribbean. The Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta had a hand in shaping its look.

It works more like a small town than a hotel: 315 rooms and suites, a collection of staffed villas with private pools, three Pete Dye golf courses led by the celebrated Teeth of the Dog, a yacht marina, the private Minitas Beach and Altos de Chavón, an artists’ village built in the manner of a 16th-century Mediterranean hamlet above the Chavón River. Distances are generous, so every room and villa comes with its own four-seater golf cart for the length of the stay.

Location

The resort lies on the country’s south-east coast, on the edge of La Romana. La Romana International Airport, which also handles private jets, is about ten minutes away by car; the airports of Santo Domingo and Punta Cana are each roughly a 50-minute drive, and guests can also fly by helicopter from Santo Domingo to the resort’s own heliport. Arrivals by sea use the marina, which takes yachts up to 250 feet (about 76 m).

Spa

The Spa, rated four stars by Forbes, covers more than 2,000 m² of indoor and outdoor space. Its hydrothermal circuit combines a sauna, steam room, vitality pool, cold plunge, heated loungers, a Kneipp walk and an outdoor pool, and treatments take place in 12 rooms. Rituals of up to 110 minutes draw on EviDenS de Beauté, Ayuna and Moringaïa, the last built around moringa, hibiscus, honey and cassava; there are also infrared detox sessions in an MLX i3Dome, a beauty salon and the Spa Café. The hydrothermal area and treatment rooms are open to guests aged 18 and over.

Sports & leisure

The sports offer covers almost everything that can be done on land or at sea:

  • golf on three Pete Dye courses: Teeth of the Dog, laid out across coral rock above the sea, Dye Fore with cliff-top holes over the Chavón River, and The Links; 63 holes in all, plus golf instruction and night golf with glowing balls
  • the Racquet Center, with 11 Har-Tru tennis courts, 4 padel courts and 8 pickleball courts
  • a shooting centre of about 245 acres with more than 200 stations for sporting clays, trap and other disciplines
  • an equestrian centre with lessons and trail rides, and polo fields with lessons for all levels and horse hire
  • a 350-slip marina for yacht outings and sport fishing for blue marlin, sailfish and wahoo
  • kayaks, snorkelling, pedal boats and other water sports at Minitas Beach
  • a fitness centre, physical therapy and a three-screen cinema by the marina
  • Altos de Chavón, with artists’ studios, a gallery, an archaeological museum, St Stanislaus Church and a 5,000-seat amphitheatre
  • trips to Catalina and Saona islands, Santo Domingo, the Cueva de las Maravillas and a cigar factory, as well as buggy rides and ziplining
For children

Supervised programmes cover ages 1 to 17 and are split by age: Toddlers ’N’ Casa (1–3), Kidz ’N’ Casa (4–6), Casa Tweens (7–12) and Bonche 4 Teens (13–17), a teens-only zone with billiards, air hockey, music and films. The younger groups run for half or full days with counsellors: playground time, arts and crafts, puppet shows, pony rides and tennis lessons, with kayaking and horse riding for the tweens. There is also a football school for ages 4–17, a family pool at Minitas Beach with a shallow children’s area and a lifeguard, and a babysitting and nanny service.

Swimming

Beach life centres on the private Minitas Beach, with white sand, clear turquoise water, loungers, cabanas, water sports and places to eat. The pools fall into three areas: by the lobby, an Olympic pool and a waterfall pool with a swim-up bar, cabanas and poolside service; at Minitas Beach Club, an adults-only infinity pool facing the sea; and nearby, a family pool with a shallow children’s section and a lifeguard, plus a larger pool overlooking the beach. Boat trips reach the quiet beaches of Catalina and Saona islands in the Parque Nacional del Este, including the Palmilla sandbar with its starfish.

Pets

Pets are not allowed; exceptions for service dogs of guests with special needs are considered case by case.
