Hotel d'Angleterre

About this hotel

General information

Hotel d'Angleterre has stood on Kongens Nytorv since the mid-18th century: in 1755 a restaurant with rooms for travellers opened here and grew into the hotel, which moved into the neighbouring building after the great fire of 1795 and has remained there ever since. Its snow-white façade is one of Copenhagen's familiar landmarks, strung with thousands of lights at Christmas. Inside, stately 19th-century architecture meets contemporary Nordic design, and art is everywhere — an original Andy Warhol, works by Joan Miró and a changing programme of exhibitions by Danish artists.

There are 92 rooms, 55 of them suites, each decorated individually. Under the same roof are the gastronomic restaurant Marchal, the Balthazar Champagne bar, the Maison d'Angleterre pâtisserie and an Amazing Space spa with an indoor pool. The event rooms are among the city's grandest: the Palm Court beneath an Italian stained-glass ceiling, the Louis XVI, the hotel's oldest ballroom, modelled on the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, The Gallery with its vaulted neoclassical ceiling and Venetian chandeliers, plus The Empire and a set of salons for private dinners and meetings.

Location

The hotel occupies one of the most prominent addresses in Copenhagen's historic centre, on Kongens Nytorv square. Nyhavn, the Strøget pedestrian street, Amalienborg and Christiansborg palaces, the Marble Church and Tivoli Gardens are all within walking distance. Kongens Nytorv metro station is a few steps from the entrance, and the metro reaches Copenhagen Airport in about 15 minutes. The concierge arranges private limousine or taxi transfers when asked at least 24 hours before arrival, and guests arriving by car are met at the door and have it parked for them.

Spa

The spa is run by Amazing Space, a holistic spa and skincare concept. Its therapists offer advanced facials, Nordic spa rituals, massages including sports massage, reflexology, acupuncture, manicures and pedicures, as well as hair styling and make-up, using treatments built on natural ingredients. Facilities include a heated indoor pool, a sauna, a steam room and a relaxation area.

Sports & leisure

The fitness room is open around the clock, with Technogym cardio machines, Kinesis stations, free weights and exercise bikes, and the spa's 12-metre pool is there for unhurried laps. The concierge team books event tickets and restaurant tables across the city and puts together ways to see Copenhagen and beyond:

  • private tours of the royal castles
  • boat trips along the canals past Nyhavn and Christianshavn, and outings on a sailing yacht
  • seaplane flights over the city
  • porcelain painting, Danish cooking classes and a distillery tour
  • excursions around Zealand and a VIP visit to LEGOLAND in Billund
For children

Families are made welcome: with notice, the room can be set up with a cot, a high chair, a baby bath, a potty, a changing mat and toys. Suites take an extra bed, connecting rooms can be booked for families, and children may use the pool at any time — those under 16 with an adult, as the pool is unsupervised.

Restaurants & bars

Food has been part of the hotel's story since it began as a restaurant, and today there are five places to eat and drink:

  • Marchal — gastronomic restaurant pairing Nordic produce with French technique; breakfast (buffet or à la carte) overlooks the square, followed by lunch, dinner and a Sunday brunch, with tables set out on the terrace and pavement of Kongens Nytorv when the weather allows, and a Wine Room for private dining
  • Marchal Bar — the restaurant's bar, for chilled drinks and snacks
  • Balthazar — Champagne bar with around 200 labels from more than 42 houses, signature cocktails, tapas-style plates and caviar, and DJs at weekends
  • The Upper Lobby — a calm upper lounge for coffee, a glass of wine or a light dish from the seasonal menu
  • Maison d'Angleterre — the pink pâtisserie, with cakes, macarons and gift hampers as well as breakfast and lunch, looking out over Kongens Nytorv and Strøget

Afternoon tea with Krug Champagne is served in the Gallery, and room service runs 24 hours a day.

Swimming

A heated 12-metre indoor pool sits within the spa, next to the sauna and steam room, and is open daily from morning to evening.

Pets

Dogs up to 10 kg are welcome, with a bed and food and water bowls provided in the room. They should not be left alone in the room; dogs are not allowed in Marchal, the bar or Balthazar, but are welcome in The Upper Lobby.
