About this hotel
General information
Chateau Mcely is a château hotel of 24 rooms and suites in the village of Mcely in the Central Bohemian Region, less than an hour’s drive from Prague. The house began life as a Baroque hunting lodge in the late 17th century and was remodelled in the 19th century in a restrained classical style. A five-hectare English park surrounds it, and St George’s Forest begins just beyond the gate.
Life here follows the seasons. The kitchen of Piano Nobile draws on herbs from the château gardens and its own smokehouse, the MCELY BOUQUET spa works with natural cosmetics blended by hand in the château’s laboratory, and a natural swimming lake with a pebble beach stands in for a pool. Every room carries its own name and individual interior, the floors are themed on the world and on time, and the largest suite occupies the tower.
Location
The château stands in the village of Mcely in the Central Bohemian Region, north-east of Prague, less than an hour away by car. By rail, trains run from Prague’s main station to Nymburk in about 40 minutes, with a bus or taxi for the last stretch. The hotel can arrange a transfer in its own car from Prague airport on request. Helicopters cannot land on the grounds, but guests can be driven over from an agreed landing site.
Spa
MCELY BOUQUET SPA is a natural spa built around the house cosmetics line of the same name, made in small batches in the château laboratory with local herbal extracts and essential oils. Treatments take place in three private suites, each suited to couples: Honey inside the château, Pearls at the top of the tower, and Silk, a timber pavilion in the park with an open fire. In the park there is a sauna house with an outdoor whirlpool beside it, the château has a herbal steam bath, and the Honey Pavilion by the lake holds wooden tubs. The sauna, whirlpool and steam bath are booked for private use, without other guests. The menu runs from signature rituals rooted in local herbal tradition to manicures, pedicures and facials.
Sports & leisure
The English park is laid out for unhurried outdoor time: a multi-purpose court for tennis, basketball and football tennis (in season), croquet, pétanque, badminton, table tennis, giant chess and an open-air fitness trail. Reception lends bicycles with helmets and a map of routes through the surrounding fields and meadows, along with yoga mats, mushroom baskets and the key to the rooftop observatory. A yellow-marked nature trail leads from the château gate into St George’s Forest, and other footpaths nearby suit running and Nordic walking. In the evening fires are lit at set spots in the park, the château has a library, and Kutná Hora, a UNESCO World Heritage town, is about an hour away by car.
For children
The children’s programme centres on Nely, the fairy-tale princess of an illustrated children’s book, with a themed suite, a children’s menu and gifts in her name. There is a playground in the park, a children’s corner with toys and colouring books in the château, children’s bikes to borrow and children’s massages in the spa under a therapist’s care. Babysitting can be arranged on request, as can activities such as yoga, treasure hunts, arts and crafts and tennis lessons.
Restaurants & bars
Dining at the château is built on the seasons, herbs from its own gardens and a house smokehouse:
- Piano Nobile — the main restaurant: seasonal cooking from mostly local produce, herbs and greens from the château gardens, fish and meat from the house smokehouse; leisurely breakfasts, à la carte, tasting and themed menus, a children’s menu and even a menu for dogs
- Bellavista Patio — a bar with a patio over the park, pouring signature cocktails made with garden ingredients and a selection of gins and rums
- The Alchemist Club — a cellar lounge for a glass of wine or cognac after dinner, with a vintage jukebox brought over from California
- Wine cellar — more than 1,000 bottles of 260 wines from around the world, Bordeaux and Czech labels among them, including a cuvée poured only at the château
- Mcely Summer Club — a lakeside summer bar, open in season to hotel guests
Swimming
In place of a pool there is a naturally filtered swimming lake with a pebble beach, open for swimming all year round and without a lifeguard. In season the Mcely Summer Club on its shore adds loungers, day beds and a summer bar, reserved for guests staying at the hotel.
Pets
Dogs and other pets may stay in their owners’ room, provided proof of the animal’s health is shown and the hotel’s pet rules are accepted. Four-legged guests are given a bed, toys and a welcome treat, and the restaurant has its own menu for dogs.
