About this hotel
General information
Chateau Herálec is a castle boutique hotel set among the forests and ponds of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Its walls go back to the 13th century; the castle was later rebuilt as a three-winged Renaissance seat with round towers, then given a neo-Gothic dress in the 19th century, with the red battlemented towers and decorative façade that still define it. A national cultural monument, it keeps a chapel of St Anne with an oratory, an armorial entrance hall and a library with a fireplace.
There are just 19 rooms and suites, each built around a large-scale installation of a landscape painting from the collection of the Vysočina Regional Gallery, which also gives the room its name. An English park with a Baroque statue and a 17th-century Calvary surrounds the house. The entire south wing is given over to a Spa by L'Occitane with a pool beneath old vaults, while the Honoria restaurant occupies the oldest part of the building.
Location
The castle stands in the village of Herálec in the Vysočina Region, roughly midway between Prague and Brno and 7 km from the D1 motorway, within easy reach of the international airports of Prague, Brno and Vienna. The grounds have a helicopter landing site; landing conditions are arranged with reception in advance.
Spa
The Spa by L'Occitane fills the castle's south wing. A 19th-century annex holds an intimate sauna world — steam, infrared, a spacious Finnish sauna and a small herbal sauna with essential oils — alongside a quiet relaxation room looking onto the trees of the English park, a hot tub in the tower and a herbarium. The massage menu runs from classic and lymphatic drainage to warm lava stones and Hawaiian lomi lomi, with L'Occitane natural products used throughout.
Sports & leisure
The fitness centre in the south wing has modern cardio and strength equipment, and the suites come with Gymstick kits for working out in the room. The English park and the surrounding Highlands forests, meadows and ponds invite long walks, and the hotel can arrange hunting or fishing nearby. In the evening the sommelier leads tastings in the wine cellar; rum tastings and a park picnic with a hamper can also be arranged, and the chapel and state rooms host private celebrations.
For children
Babysitting is available by prior arrangement.
Restaurants & bars
Dining centres on the Honoria restaurant and a handful of intimate rooms:
- Honoria — the restaurant in the oldest part of the castle: Czech cooking reinterpreted with local produce, a tasting menu and à la carte, handmade tableware and Murano-style glass; smart casual for dinner
- Café Agasia — a café overlooking the castle parterre, serving à la carte breakfast with home-baked pastries and afternoon coffee
- Lounge In the Tower — a secluded tower room for private dinners of up to eight
- Chateau bar — a considered selection of spirits, with a humidor in the adjoining lounge, the only room in the castle where cigars may be smoked
- Wine cellar — Czech and international wines for tastings
In fine weather, a picnic in the park can be arranged with a chateau blanket and a basket of delicacies.
Swimming
The indoor pool lies under the historic vaults of the former stables, cut into the very rock the castle stands on, and forms part of the spa in the south wing.
Pets
Pets are welcome at the hotel, though not in the Honoria restaurant or the spa area.
