Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort, Costa Rica

About this hotel

General information

Andaz sits on a forested hillside above Culebra Bay, inside the private Peninsula Papagayo in northern Guanacaste — some 570 hectares of tropical dry forest with its own beaches, trails and wildlife. The buildings are conceived like a treehouse: every room, suite and villa faces the bay, and the terraces seem to hang among the branches. Natural materials, glass walls that fold open to the forest and local details shape the interiors.

There are 176 places to stay, from guestrooms to villas and three-level penthouses at the top of the hill. The resort is known for a busy programme on land and water, its own beach club, Casa de Playa, the ONDA spa with its nature domes in the forest, and a handful of restaurants. Andaz guests also use the peninsula's facilities — the golf course, courts, Papagayo Park and The Outpost adventure centre. The hotel holds the highest level of Costa Rica's CST sustainable-tourism certification, and two of its beaches fly the Bandera Azul Ecológica.

Location

Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste: the resort climbs a hillside above Culebra Bay, close to the marina. Liberia International Airport is about 35 minutes by road; guest services arrange transfers from there or from San José International Airport on request.

Spa

ONDA Spa & Wellness is set in the tropical forest around a group of nature domes. The hydrotherapy dome has a cold plunge, a steam room and a relaxation pool; the Mind & Body dome hosts AntiGravity aerial yoga, hatha and vinyasa yoga, meditation, reiki and sound sessions, including a suspended sound bath. The menu centres on The Lunar Collection, signature journeys shaped by the moon's cycles and made with local ingredients such as pitahaya, cacao, volcanic minerals, citrus and coconut milk, alongside massages, facials and vibroacoustic sessions. The spa is open daily from 8am to 8pm, and the Beauty Bar next door offers hair, nails and make-up. A 24-hour air-conditioned gym, an open-air functional deck with TRX and kettlebells, and a yoga deck over the bay complete the picture.

Sports & leisure

Kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling gear are free at the resort's beaches, and a coral trail with its own nursery runs along the shore. The Explorers, the peninsula's naturalist guides, lead outings on land and sea, and several peninsula facilities are open to Andaz guests:

  • on the water: guided snorkelling, free diving, water bikes, outrigger canoes, bioluminescence trips and kayaking through the mangroves
  • private boat charters for snorkelling, diving, paddleboarding and jet skis; guided scuba dives and coral planting
  • surf lessons and trips to well-known breaks with the SurfX programme
  • The Outpost at Palmares Preserve, seven minutes away: the Aerial Adventure Course with seven ziplines, a 21-obstacle ropes course, archery, electric mountain bikes, off-road trips, hikes, birdwatching, monkey spotting and night walks
  • the 18-hole, par-72 Ocean Course, with ocean views from 14 holes, and clay tennis courts at the golf clubhouse
  • Papagayo Park, seven minutes by shuttle and free for guests: pools with slides, a lap pool, tennis, pickleball and padel courts, a pump track, basketball and an art studio
  • e-bikes from nine bike-share stations across the peninsula, and a waterside running trail to the marina (about 3 km there and back)
  • cooking classes — ceviche, empanadas, barista skills and cocktails
  • day trips: waterfalls and mud pots in Rincón de la Vieja National Park, the Río Celeste and hanging bridges near Tenorio Volcano, rafting on the Tenorio River, Arenal Volcano, the Monteverde cloud forest and a road trip through the villages of the Nicoya Peninsula
For children

Cambi Kids Club welcomes children aged 4–11 daily from 8am to 5pm, free of charge apart from meals, with storytelling, arts and crafts and outdoor games; Tropical Cambi Nights add evening games and dinner. The Explorers run two-hour Junior Scouts sessions on the peninsula's nature for young explorers, and teenagers have their own active programme, Nomads. Babysitters look after children from 3 months to 12 years between 8am and 10pm (two hours minimum). Papagayo Park has a children's area with a splash pad and playground.

Restaurants & bars

The restaurants open onto terraces and forest, with menus ranging from Southeast Asia to the Mediterranean:

  • Ostra — Southeast Asian cooking with local produce, a cocktail lounge and a terrace over Culebra Bay; Perla, a sushi bar, sits within it
  • Chao Pescao — Latin American and Caribbean sharing plates, inventive cocktails, live Latin music and views of the marina
  • Gaio — the resort's largest restaurant, a southern Italian trattoria serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with Gaio Bar
  • Meso — Mediterranean cooking with Mesoamerican touches at the Casa de Playa beach club on Nacascolo Beach; lunch daily, dinner in season
  • Coffee & Vinyls — specialty coffee, a record player with a vinyl library, wine and deli bites
  • Eat-In — 24-hour in-room dining
Swimming

Three infinity pools look out over the bay; the family pool has a shallow entry for children, while the relaxation pool by Ostra is for guests aged 18 and over. A three-minute walk below the pools, Sombrero Oscuro is a volcanic-sand beach with loungers and daybeds in the shade of the trees, drinks service and water-sports gear. Five minutes from the adults' pool, Sombrero Claro is a quiet white-sand beach without services and the start of the snorkelling trail. The complimentary Nimbu boat reaches the broad Nacascolo Beach in 10 minutes, home to the Casa de Playa beach club with its pool, cabanas and Meso restaurant.
