General information
Te Vakaroa Villas is a gated boutique property of six villas set directly on Muri Beach, on the south-east coast of Rarotonga. Its name translates as “the long canoe”. Three villas have one bedroom and three have two; all sit on the beachfront, with views across Muri Lagoon to the reef and the open Pacific beyond. The villas have contemporary interiors and generous verandas, set in a tropical garden of hibiscus, ginger and palms.
It is an adults-only address: children under 12 are not accepted, and no more than twenty guests stay at any one time. There is no restaurant or spa on site; instead every villa has a full kitchen, breakfast is delivered each morning, and the concierge and front office are staffed daily and on call around the clock. Solar panels cover part of the power needs, and drinking water is filtered on site rather than bottled.
Location
The villas stand right on Muri Beach, with a private gate from the grounds onto the sand. Rarotonga’s international airport is about 20 minutes away by a private transfer the property arranges. A car for exploring the island can be hired on site, and several restaurants are within walking distance along the beach.
Sports & leisure
Kayaks and snorkelling gear are included. Muri Lagoon is wide and relatively deep here, 2–3 m, with no strong currents, coral and reef fish; it suits swimming, kayaking and kitesurfing, and windsurfers and sailing dinghies can be hired. Close by there are also:
- glass-bottom boat trips on Muri Lagoon and boat trips around the island;
- diving with Rarotonga’s dive centres;
- whale watching near the reef in season;
- the Cross-Island Track past Te Rua Manga, best walked with a local guide;
- 4WD trips into the less accessible parts of the island;
- a day flight to Aitutaki to see Aitutaki’s lagoon.
Small weddings for up to twenty guests can be held on the beach or in the grounds.
Restaurants & bars
There is no restaurant of its own. A tropical breakfast — fresh fruit, baked goods, coffee and freshly squeezed juice — is delivered to the villa each morning up to 11am. The neighbouring Sails restaurant and bar serves its menu in the villas or by the pool, and a chef can be arranged. Otherwise guests cook in their villa kitchens or walk along the beach to one of several nearby restaurants.
Swimming
Every villa is on the beachfront, and a gate leads straight onto the white sand of Muri Beach and the calm lagoon. In the grounds there is a 15-metre saltwater infinity pool heated all year, with a Jacuzzi, a gazebo, a lounging pavilion and sun loungers; beach towels are provided in the villas.
Rooms
Six villas: three with one bedroom and three with two. Each has its own living room with a dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, a washer and dryer, and a veranda looking over the pool to the lagoon.
Every villa has air conditioning and ceiling fans, insect screens, free Wi-Fi, satellite TV, Bluetooth audio, a desk with a telephone, a safe, a minibar, an ice maker, a kitchen with dishwasher, hob and oven, organic Matakana Botanicals toiletries, bathrobes, a hairdryer and an outdoor shower.
One Bedroom Villa
A one-bedroom villa for two: two of the villas have a four-poster king bed, the third a king bed that splits into two singles. An en-suite bathroom, a kitchen with dining area, a large veranda over the pool and lagoon, and a courtyard off the bedroom.
Two Bedroom Villa
A two-level villa with two bedrooms: two super-king beds (one splits into two singles), two en-suite bathrooms and a ground-floor powder room. Each bedroom opens onto its own balcony with lagoon and mountain views, and the veranda, with a large day bed and seating for eight, looks over the infinity pool to the ocean; up to four adults plus a rollaway bed.
