About this hotel
General information
Pacific Resort Aitutaki is a small, quiet resort on the shore of the Aitutaki lagoon: 29 bungalows and villas set directly on a white-sand beach within dense tropical gardens, each with its own deck facing the water. Interiors pair timber furniture with Polynesian décor, and little more than a private deck separates each one from the lagoon.
Guests must be 12 or over, which keeps the mood calm and largely couple-oriented. A freshwater infinity pool and the Black Rock Bar look out over the lagoon towards the sunset, Rapae Bay Restaurant cooks with local produce and seafood, and Tiare Spa offers massages and beauty treatments. In the lagoon lies the Aquatic Eco Trail, a self-guided snorkelling route created with a conservation organisation to show how the reef works.
Location
The resort sits right on the Aitutaki lagoon, about a seven-minute drive from Aitutaki's airport; the flight from Rarotonga takes around 50 minutes. Shared return airport transfers are complimentary for guests, and a concierge meets arrivals at the airport when the flight number and arrival time are sent ahead.
Spa
Tiare Spa is open seven days a week for massages and facial and body treatments; some massages are given to the sound of the waves, and therapists can also come to the guest's bungalow or villa. Couples' treatments are available. The spa works with Te Tika, an organic skincare range made with Cook Islands ingredients, which is also sold on site. Advance booking is essential.
Sports & leisure
Kayaks for paddling the lagoon and bicycles for touring the island are complimentary, and the resort has an infinity pool, a tours and activities desk and on-site car hire. The highlight is the Aquatic Eco Trail, a self-guided snorkelling route through five zones marked by white buoys: mature coral bommies, regenerating corals, an Acropora nursery, sea-cucumber beds and a sandy near-shore nursery. Green sea turtles, angelfish, butterflyfish, blue starfish and giant clams may be seen along the way.
- kitesurfing over the lagoon's shallow sandbars with local operators — the trade-wind season runs from May to October
- lagoon cruises and snorkelling around the Aitutaki lagoon
- scuba diving
- a hike to the summit of Maunga Pu for the views
Restaurants & bars
Rapae Bay Restaurant overlooks the lagoon, serving breakfast from 7.30 to 10.30 and an all-day menu from noon to 9 pm: dishes shaped by Cook Islands and wider Pacific flavours alongside international cooking, built on fresh local produce and seafood, with a considered wine list; booking ahead is recommended. The relaxed Black Rock Bar by the pool serves cocktails and light meals and is the place to watch the sun set over the lagoon. Room service is available to resort guests.
Swimming
The resort stands directly on a white-sand beach on the Aitutaki lagoon, where swimming is possible at any tide. Sun loungers, hammocks and beach towels are provided. The freshwater infinity pool above the lagoon is reserved for in-house guests.
