Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Cartagena

About this hotel

General information

Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Cartagena spreads across a cluster of restored landmarks in Getsemaní, the art-filled, music-loving quarter just outside the walls of the UNESCO-listed old town. At its heart are the 16th-century San Francisco cloister and church; beside them stands Club Cartagena, a 1920s beaux-arts building designed by the French architect Gastón Lelarge, while one restaurant occupies the shell of a former cinema. A contemporary wing and two colonial houses, Casa Ambrad and Casa Morales, complete the ensemble.

Interiors pair Spanish colonial heritage with an avant-garde edge: dark woods, lofty ceilings, rugs, headboards and stone consoles made by Colombian craftspeople, and here and there old frescoes and stonework uncovered during the restoration. Terraced tropical gardens planted with native species link the buildings. Two pools sit on the roof, the UMARI spa occupies the old cloisters, and eight restaurants and bars have made the hotel one of the city’s social hubs.

Location

The hotel is in Getsemaní, a short walk from the gates of Cartagena’s walled old town and opposite the city’s convention centre. Rafael Núñez International Airport is 5.5 km away, about 15 minutes by car; the concierge arranges transfers, including luxury car service.

Spa

UMARI spa lies within the restored cloisters of the former monastery. It has six treatment rooms, among them a large couples’ suite with its own lounge, a deep bathtub and a shower, plus a steam room and relaxation lounge by the changing rooms. Massages, facials, body treatments and multi-step rituals draw on Colombian plants, fruits and ancestral healing traditions, and there is a first-day massage to shake off jet lag. A hair and beauty salon with manicure and pedicure stations, a boutique of products by Colombian makers, and mindfulness programmes with meditation and one-to-one consultations complete the offer.

Sports & leisure

The 24-hour fitness centre is equipped with Technogym cardio, strength and functional machines, and personal trainers are available on request; the spa also runs movement, meditation and sound sessions. The concierge arranges private outings:

  • walking tours of the walled old town and the San Felipe de Barajas fortress, and personal shopping in the old city
  • a Getsemaní neighbourhood walk with a local guide, a street-art workshop and a salsa lesson with professional dancers
  • a trek with biologists in a private nature reserve an hour away, home to the rare cotton-top tamarin, howler monkeys and many birds
  • birdwatching at the National Aviary of Colombia, with more than 170 species
  • yacht or catamaran days to the Rosario Islands or Barú, sunset cruises on a restored mahogany boat, and surfing
  • a helicopter flight over the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to the ruins of Ciudad Perdida, with paddling on a jungle river and a picnic on the shore
For children

Babysitting can be arranged on request.

Restaurants & bars

Eight restaurants and bars are spread mostly through the historic buildings, from a lemon-tree courtyard to glass-roofed spaces on the roof.

  • The Grand Grill — steakhouse in Club Cartagena: American beef over open flame, Colombian produce, martinis and the classics
  • Pizzeria Della Chiesa — wood-fired Neapolitan pizza and pasta in the former cinema
  • El Patio del Limonar — breakfast buffet in a lemon-tree courtyard: international dishes, Colombian fruit, fresh breads and juices
  • El Palmar — rooftop restaurant with 360-degree city views and cooking built on Colombian and Latin American ingredients; cocktails and soft music at sunset
  • Bar Lelarge — candlelit cocktail bar behind carved stone, with a deep wine list and tapas
  • Café Rialto — speciality coffee from leading Colombian growers, pastries and desserts
  • El Aljibe — hidden cocktail bar in a former water cistern, with signature drinks and small bites
  • Atrio — rooftop bar under a glass ceiling in the manner of a garden conservatory: wines, classic cocktails, coffee and an evening aperitivo above the old town

In-room dining is available around the clock.

Swimming

The roof holds two pools, each with an open-air bar and a 360-degree view over the modern skyline and the walled old town with its clock tower. There is no beach of its own; for the sea, the concierge arranges private yacht or catamaran trips to the coral Rosario Islands and Barú, with swimming and snorkelling.
