About this hotel
General information
Hotel Casa San Agustín brings together three colonial houses in Cartagena’s walled old town, with roots in the 17th century. Their restoration kept the wooden-beamed ceilings, old wall frescoes and whitewashed walls, and the furnishings stay quiet and traditional rather than museum-like. Patios and open-air spaces sit between the houses, cooled by the breeze off the Caribbean Sea.
It is an intimate hotel of 20 rooms and 11 suites, each furnished a little differently. The pace is unhurried: tea is served in the library at five every afternoon, and the concierges plan personal routes through the city. The hotel is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World and is home to Alma, a Caribbean restaurant, the Alma Bar and Aurum Spa with its hammam.
Location
The hotel stands in the Centro district, in the historic heart of Cartagena’s walled old town. The Museum of Modern Art is a 7-minute walk away and the Naval Museum 9 minutes. Rafael Núñez International Airport is about 20 minutes by car.
Spa
Aurum Spa takes its name from the Latin word for gold, and the menu draws on gold and the sun, both revered by pre-Columbian cultures. Treatments include:
- hammam — a steam ritual with a scrub of coffee, volcanic mud and tobacco
- rituals: Time is Gold with a golden nourishing emulsion, Treasures of the Sea with an algae wrap, and Passion for Life for couples, which begins in the jacuzzi
- body scrubs with Cartagena coffee, lemongrass and mimosa, or sea salt and rosemary
- massages — herbal, Pure Gold, Jet Lag with lymphatic drainage, deep tissue, reflexology and hot stones
- facials, manicures and pedicures
Sports & leisure
Leisure here revolves around the city, with the hotel’s concierges planning routes through the old town and beyond.
- cycling and walking routes through the streets inside the city walls
- the San Felipe de Barajas fortress and the La Popa convent
- historic churches, including the cathedral and Santo Domingo church
- the Naval Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, both close to the hotel
- a day at the private Acasí Rustic Beach on Barú island
- afternoon tea in the library at five every day
Restaurants & bars
Alma reinterprets Cartagena’s cooking: produce from land and sea, organic ingredients and Caribbean recipes given a contemporary twist, with the kitchen’s own take on ceviche among the signatures. Lunch and dinner are open to non-residents too. Alma Bar serves Cartagena “by the glass”, with local cocktails including the signature Alcatraz. Breakfast is served at Alma, and in-room dining is available on request.
Swimming
Guests have access to the hotel’s private Acasí Rustic Beach on Barú island, about an hour from Cartagena: white sand, turquoise Caribbean water and only a few guests at a time. The beach has its own restaurant serving Colombian cooking with tropical flavours.
