The Peninsula Shanghai

About this hotel

General information

The Peninsula Shanghai stands on the Bund close to Suzhou Creek and was conceived as an echo of glamorous 1920s Shanghai. Its Art Deco interiors bring together mahogany and ebony, contrasting black and ivory stone, velvet and lacquer, and its 235 rooms and suites look out over the river and the Pudong skyline, the gardens and the historic Garden Bridge, or the city. Even the smallest room measures 54 m².

The hotel delights in details with a story: a faithful replica of a 1930s lift, built by Schindler from an original in a Belgian lift museum, runs between the basement and the second floor, and a glass-walled event lounge on the 14th floor displays antiques and memorabilia from the history of aviation in China. The two-level, 7,000 m² Peninsula Arcade gathers boutiques of international jewellery and fashion houses alongside a hair salon. The house fleet, finished in Peninsula green, counts four extended-wheelbase Rolls-Royce Phantoms, six BMW Peninsula Editions and a seven-seat Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

Location

The address is No. 32 The Bund, on the Bund, Shanghai’s riverfront promenade in the heart of the city, with views over the Huangpu River, Pudong and Suzhou Creek. Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is 16.8 km away and Shanghai Pudong International Airport 42.1 km. On request, the hotel can greet guests at the aircraft door, and chauffeured cars from its own fleet are available for journeys around the city.

Spa

The Peninsula Spa on the third floor covers more than 1,250 m² and is styled after 1930s Art Deco, with navy and ivory tones, dark wood floors, fireplaces, underfloor heating and large botanical artworks. After a treatment, guests use the thermal suite, with an aroma-misted steam room, shaved ice for cooling down, a sauna and showers with side jets, cool mist and rain settings. There is a spa suite for treatments and an Asian tea lounge with an outdoor terrace. Treatments draw on VOYA’s Irish seaweed products, Margy’s Monte Carlo and the aromatherapy range of Subtle Energies; signature rituals include a sleep-focused relaxation treatment with meditation and a heated-bowl therapy scented with agarwood.

Sports & leisure

The 24-hour fitness centre on the third floor overlooks the garden and is equipped with Life Fitness machines with individual screens, treadmills, free weights and a weight station; personal trainers are on hand, and yoga classes take place by the pool. The gym is open to guests aged 12 and over.

The Peninsula Academy introduces Shanghai through hosted classes and encounters:

  • a tai chi class for health and balance
  • an introduction to contemporary Chinese art
  • a meeting with a Shanghai fashion designer on modern Shanghai style
Restaurants & bars

Dining spans Cantonese classics, contemporary Northern Italian cooking, Japanese tempura, afternoon tea and cocktail bars, with in-room dining around the clock.

  • Yi Long Court — Cantonese cuisine and dim sum on the second floor, in a dining room modelled on a wealthy 1920s Shanghai merchant’s home; seven private dining rooms named after celebrated Chinese teas and a chef’s table for eight with windows into the kitchen
  • The Lobby — contemporary continental cooking with a Shanghai accent from 6 am to 11 pm beneath crystal chandeliers, and the signature Peninsula Afternoon Tea with live jazz
  • Restaurant on the 13th floor — a contemporary take on Northern Italian cuisine, a wine list of more than 400 labels and views of the Bund, the Huangpu and Pudong
  • Rooftop bar and terrace (14th floor) — open-air cocktails and small plates with a panorama of the river and Pudong
  • The Compass Bar — classic cocktails and light bar fare in velvet-lined, nautically themed rooms with a fireplace, plus an open garden terrace
  • TAKIYA SHANGHAI — the first overseas outpost of a Tokyo tempura restaurant, serving dinner on level B1
  • In-Room Dining — available 24 hours, from Western breakfasts and Chinese specialities to desserts and children’s favourites
Swimming

The heated indoor pool on the third floor is 25 m long, 7.5 m wide and 1.35 m deep, tiled in navy and white, with an Art Deco fireplace and a small vitality pool alongside. Doors open onto an outdoor terrace overlooking the garden, where the healthy Naturally Peninsula menu is served, and there is a steam room and sauna nearby. The pool is open from 6 am to 10 pm; children under 12 swim with an adult.
