About this hotel
General information
Mandarin Oriental Qianmen, Beijing has no main building, no floors and no corridors. It is made up of 42 separate siheyuan, traditional courtyard houses, scattered along the lanes of Caochang hutong in the historic heart of Beijing. Behind modest doorways come high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, carved stone, timber columns and bronze sculpture alongside contemporary furniture and work by local artists, while magnolias, begonias and persimmon trees in the courtyards bring the seasons right up to the living-room windows.
The shared spaces occupy old courtyards too: a Cantonese and Chaozhou restaurant, an Italian trattoria, a cocktail bar in a two-storey hutong house and a tea lounge beside a century-old maple. The spa, with its own tea house and meditation space, has a quiet courtyard of its own, and two halls, Mandarin Palace and Zhengyang Mansion, offer some 600 m² for weddings, receptions and private dinners.
Location
The hotel sits in Caochang hutong in Dongcheng district, on Beijing's Central Axis, the cultural spine of the old city. Dashilan Street is a 10–15-minute walk and Qianmen pedestrian street 15–20 minutes on foot; by car it is about 10 minutes to the Temple of Heaven, 10–15 minutes to the Forbidden City and 15–20 minutes to Wangfujing. Both Beijing Capital International and Beijing Daxing International airports are roughly 50 minutes away by car, traffic permitting; the concierge arranges private transfers in advance, and there is complimentary parking on site.
Spa
The Spa is tucked into a tranquil courtyard, with three treatment rooms including a double suite, a steam room in the women's changing area and a sauna in the men's, its own tea house and a boutique stocking the products used in treatments. Therapies draw on traditional Chinese wellness: the signature Essence of Hutong rituals, massages, body treatments, Biologique Recherche facials and multi-day wellness retreats. The separate Qiyuan Healing Space is given over to meditation and sound therapy with singing bowls and gongs.
Sports & leisure
A 24-hour fitness centre with Technogym equipment, personal training and yoga, Pilates and tai chi classes with the hotel's instructors; every courtyard house has its own yoga mat. The Tea House hosts tea ceremonies and tastings, and the Qiyuan Healing Space holds meditation sessions. The concierge offers a curated set of cultural, culinary and wellness experiences that begin in the hutong courtyards, and plans routes around Beijing's landmarks.
For children
A daycare service looks after children aged 5–12. Young guests get their own check-in and room key card, plus books and toys from the miniMO collection featuring the cats Cai Gao and Ba Dou, and a tipi tent can be set up in the house for a film night. VICINI has a dedicated children's menu, in-room dining offers dishes for children too, and the concierge helps plan family outings around the city.
Restaurants & bars
The hotel's four venues occupy old hutong houses, and their kitchens also serve guests in the courtyard houses.
- Yan Garden — Cantonese and Chaozhou cuisine: seafood, Cantonese roast meats, dim sum and slow-simmered soups, in a dining room or a courtyard shaded by two trees
- VICINI — Italian from breakfast to dinner: handmade pasta, pizza and Fiorentina steak, with a terrace over the hutong
- TIAO — a cocktail bar over two floors of a hutong house, with Beijing-inspired bar food and DJ sets
- Maple Lounge — Chinese and oriental teas and afternoon tea, indoors or in the courtyard beneath a century-old maple
- In-room dining — from breakfast to late evening
