General information
Capella Tufu Bay is a secluded beach resort on Hainan’s tropical southern coast, where flowering gardens run down to the golden sand of Tufu Bay and the calm South China Sea. Its concept draws on the Maritime Silk Road, on which Hainan once linked East and West, and the old trade route shows through in the architecture, the landscaping, the food and even the design of the menus.
There are 190 rooms, suites and villas, finished in quiet earth tones with clean modern lines and fine Chinese craftsmanship, each with a balcony or terrace. Capella Culturists, well versed in local history, introduce guests to the culture of the Li people, their brocade weaving and Shanlan rice wine. The highlights are the 4,000 m²-plus Auriga Spa with its hammam and snow cabin, the Cantonese restaurant Lan Ting, and The Living Room with its books and artefacts on the sea trade.
Location
The resort lies on the southern coast of Hainan Island, in the Tufu Bay resort area near Yingzhou Town in Lingshui County. Its buildings and villas are spread through tropical gardens on the South China Sea shore, and several villas open straight onto the beach.
Spa
Auriga Spa covers more than 4,000 m² and takes its name from the Auriga constellation, home of the star Capella; its programmes follow the cycles of the moon and blend ancient Eastern traditions with modern therapies. At its heart are a domed marble hammam, where the cleansing ritual includes a kese-mitt scrub and an olive-soap foam massage, and a snow cabin for cooling down after heat treatments. There are ten treatment rooms, including two for couples and two VIP suites with private plunge pools and steam rooms, a thermal suite with separate male and female vitality pools, indoor cabanas over a reflection pond, outdoor cabanas, sleep pods, a spa garden and a beauty salon. The Detox Retreat, Mindfulness Journey and Art of Balance programmes go deeper, and weekly sessions include singing-bowl meditation and workshops on making herbal compresses, scented sachets and agarwood or sandalwood incense.
Sports & leisure
The athletic centre has a modern gym, a personal training zone, a heated 125 m² lap pool, a studio for yoga, Pilates and meditation, and an outdoor tai chi area. Next to it are two floodlit tennis courts, and on the beach and the water the resort offers:
- Hobie Cat sailing with an instructor, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding
- beach volleyball, beach fishing and archery
- yoga classes and personal training
- Capella Curates programmes: Li traditions and visits to local homes, brocade weaving and making Shanlan rice wine in The Living Room
For children
The Capella Little Stars programme covers children’s in-room amenities, a dedicated kids’ menu and a daily activity schedule. The kids’ club, for ages 3–6, has an outdoor sand-digging area, slides, a games room, a reading room and a nursery room, with finger painting, coconut-leaf weaving and Li brocade weaving among the activities. The Adventure Zone has a zip line, a go-kart track, a climbing wall and cooking classes, and the Water Zone by the beach has water slides, interactive water features and water guns. There is also the Little Stars Explorers Camp, and the spa offers a parent-and-child journey with a hot Jacuzzi and a soothing massage.
Restaurants & bars
The dining leans towards Asian flavours, and meals can also be served in a villa or at a table for two on the beach.
- Silk Road — the main restaurant under a dome, with buffet stations tracing the ports of the Maritime Silk Road from the Mediterranean, the Middle East and India to Singapore, Thailand and Hainan, and a Noodle Bar at its centre
- Lan Ting — modern Cantonese cuisine in a setting modelled on a traditional Chinese tea house, with a Tea Lounge where a tea sommelier leads tea preparation, plus tea-infused cocktails
- Sabai Sabai — classic Thai cooking and a terrace looking out to sea
- Living Room & The Bar — an evening bar for cocktails built on Hainan’s tropical fruit and spices, whisky, cognac and wine, with a drinks list styled as a captain’s logbook
- Pool Bar — light bites and drinks by the pool, served to the cabanas
Swimming
The resort faces the sandy beach of Tufu Bay, and the Two Bedroom Oceanfront Villa and Four Bedroom Oceanfront Villa have direct beach access. The landscaped pool is surrounded by a wide sun deck and private air-conditioned cabanas with a television, their own shower and restroom, bookable for half or full days. Lap swimmers have the heated 125 m² pool in the athletic centre, children have the Water Zone with its slides, and every villa has a private pool.
Rooms
The 190 rooms, suites and villas are set in the main building, in low-rise houses among the gardens and around the grounds, each with a balcony or terrace over the gardens or the sea. Selected villas and the penthouse come with a dedicated 24-hour Capella Culturist.
Welcome amenities, Editions de Parfum Frédéric Malle toiletries, a bath and separate rain shower, a selection of teas and Nespresso coffee, a minibar of snacks and soft drinks replenished daily, a flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi and 24-hour in-room dining.
