Banyan Tree Ringha

About this hotel

General information

Banyan Tree Ringha lies in the high Ringha Valley near the city of Shangri-La in northern Yunnan, among meadows, conifer forest and mountain ridges at more than 3,000 m. It was the first Banyan Tree resort in China, and its 32 villas were assembled from old farmhouses that were taken apart and rebuilt in the valley.

The architecture keeps the local Tibetan farmhouse style: brightly painted timber posts, fine carving, earthen fireplaces, painted motifs and woven rugs. The pace is deliberately slow, built around valley walks, mountain cooking and the crafts and daily life of the surrounding villages. There is a Banyan Tree Spa, a Banyan Tree Gallery shop selling handicrafts, meeting rooms, and the resort hosts weddings.

Location

The resort stands in Hong Po village in the Ringha Valley, about 50 m from the riverbank. Shangri-La Diqing Airport is 23 km away (around 32 minutes by car) and Shangri-La high-speed railway station 26 km (about 40 minutes). Shangri-La Old Town (Dukezong), with its traditional buildings and local markets, is 19 km away, as is Pudacuo National Park, while the seasonal Napa Lake and its highland grassland are 29 km away.

Spa

Banyan Tree Spa Ringha draws on Himalayan healing traditions and the Chinese philosophy of the five elements. The signature Ringha Relief uses Yunnan ingredients: a body scrub, a hot-stone massage and a nourishing body treatment applied with herbal pouches. The menu also covers Balinese and deep-tissue massage, a head-and-shoulders treatment and foot massage.

Sports & leisure

A walking trail runs around the resort, and the team arranges walks and excursions through the valleys and along mountain routes.

  • guided hikes to Ringha Monastery and nature walks
  • thangka painting workshops with local masters, butter-lamp making and prayer-flag printing
  • visits to homes in nearby villages to see butter tea and tsampa — roasted barley flour — being made
  • the old Dabao Temple, 300 m from the resort and best reached on foot in the morning
  • trips to Shangri-La Old Town, Pudacuo National Park, Napa Lake and the high-altitude Shudu and Bita lakes
Restaurants & bars

Cooking leans on highland produce such as wild mushrooms, mountain barley and organic yak, and meals can also be served in the villas.

  • Llamo Restaurant — a relaxed restaurant with local and Western dishes and Chinese and Western set menus
  • Changsa Restaurant — local mountain cooking, hot pots and barbecue, afternoon tea, and a collection of Chinese rice wines and sake
  • Mongolian yurt dining — a private hot-pot and barbecue dinner in a felt yurt on an alpine meadow, with highland barley spirit, a personal butler and Guozhuang dancing around a bonfire after sunset
