Banyan Tree Lijiang

About this hotel

General information

Banyan Tree Lijiang lies at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, right beside the old town of Shuhe and within easy reach of Baisha and its Dongba heritage. It is the second Banyan Tree resort in China, and its architecture borrows the language of the Nakhi people: grey-tiled roofs, water channels, broad courtyards and gardens, with the snowy summits visible from every villa.

There are 123 suites and villas, two restaurants and a bar, a Banyan Tree Spa and a Banyan Tree Gallery shop of crafts and spa products. Between outings guests cycle, join yoga sessions, play tennis or settle into the library. The resort opens a window onto Nakhi customs, from bonfire dancing to Dongba script, hosts weddings either as a traditional Nakhi ceremony or in a modern style for up to 200 guests, and its three function rooms, 568 m² in all, take events of up to 260 people.

Location

The resort stands on Longquan Road in Shuhe, on the edge of Lijiang in Yunnan province. Lijiang Sanyi International Airport is 36 km away and Lijiang railway station about 30 minutes by car. By hotel car it is roughly 20 minutes to the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Lijiang and the same to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area, while the sister resort, Banyan Tree Ringha, is about three hours’ drive.

Spa

Banyan Tree Spa Lijiang shapes its treatments around the Chinese Five Elements philosophy and natural Yunnan ingredients, with therapists trained in both traditional and modern techniques.

  • Yunnan Bounty — a scrub of local ingredients, a hot-stone massage and a nourishing body treatment applied with herbal pouches
  • Royal Banyan — the signature massage blending Eastern and Western techniques, with a warm herbal pouch dipped in sesame oil
  • Tropical Rainmist — a purifying scrub, extra moisture and a massage beneath a warm rain shower
Sports & leisure

Days divide between quiet time in the grounds and outings to the mountains and old towns, with most routes arranged around the guest.

  • a gym with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, instructor-led yoga, an outdoor tennis court and a library
  • bicycle rental and the resort’s signature bike tour
  • a guided walk through the old towns of Shuhe and Baisha, trips to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (5,486 m) and the 15 km trek through Tiger Leaping Gorge
  • the Wenhai trail into a sub-alpine valley at around 3,000 m, horse riding around Lashihai Lake and a drive to the town of Shigu at the First Bend of the Yangtze
  • the Stay for Good programme: Nakhi bonfire dancing, Dongba painting on stone with a cultural guide and a workshop shaping the clay tile cat, a Nakhi guardian charm
  • Harvest Green, the organic garden, where guests pick seasonal vegetables and fruit for the chef to cook
For children

The Kids Club, set within the spa complex, is stocked with educational books and toys, giving children a space of their own to play.

Restaurants & bars

Dining centres on Chinese and Yunnan flavours, and meals can also be served in the villas.

  • Bai Yun — Cantonese and Yunnan cooking beside a koi pond against the mountains, with soft live music
  • Ming Yue — Yunnan dishes with a modern touch alongside an international menu; breakfast and lunch indoors or outside with mountain views
  • Wen Hai Bar — cocktails, tea, coffee, light bites and afternoon tea; by evening, candlelight and the peaks glowing at sunset
  • Destination Dining — private meals in the villa, a table for two in the pagoda, barbecues and menus tailored to the guest
