Amanyangyun

About this hotel

General information

Amanyangyun is a country retreat on the green edge of Shanghai, in Minhang district, wrapped in camphor forest and lakes. Its story is unusual: fifty Ming- and Qing-dynasty houses and ten thousand camphor trees were moved here from the countryside near Fuzhou, more than 700 km away, after a reservoir was planned on the site of their villages. The houses were taken apart and restored brick by brick, and an 80-tonne King Camphor Tree now stands at the heart of the forest that has grown up around them.

The resort has 24 contemporary suites and pavilions and 11 antique villas set around quiet courtyards, so the whole place reads like a small village. Cultural life centres on Nan Shufang, housed in relocated antique buildings, named after a reading pavilion in the Forbidden City and furnished in precious nanmu wood. Beside the resort lies a 10-hectare forest park with trails for walking and cycling, along with an organic kitchen garden and a private cinema.

Location

The resort sits in Minhang district on the fringe of Shanghai, among woods and lakes. Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is 24 km away, about 30 minutes by car; Shanghai Pudong International Airport is 55 km away, 40–50 minutes depending on traffic. The hotel arranges private limousine transfers, including to the Bund, the water town of Zhujiajiao and nearby golf courses.

Spa

Aman Spa pairs treatments rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern therapies. There are ten treatment rooms (eight single, two double), two private bathing suites with a hammam, a sauna, a cold plunge pool, a jacuzzi, relaxation lounges, a tea lounge and a poolside terrace. A separate movement space holds a light-filled gym and studios for Pilates and yoga.

  • Amanyangyun Seasonal Journey — a two-hour ritual that draws on Chinese medicine to rebalance the body with the season
  • a hammam ritual of steam, scrub, massage, hydrotherapy and herbal tea
  • a facial with the Japanese-made Essential Skin range, plus red and near-infrared light therapy
  • tai chi, meditation and sound bowl sessions
Sports & leisure

Days here mix nature, movement and Chinese culture.

  • walks, runs and bike rides through the forest park, picnics in the glades and wooden-boat rides on the lake
  • guided tai chi, yoga and meditation outdoors
  • classes at Nan Shufang: calligraphy, the guqin and guzheng zithers, a tea ceremony tasting three Chinese teas, and the art of incense
  • a tour of the 200 m² organic garden that supplies every kitchen on the estate, picking produce with the chef
  • a blessing at the King Camphor Tree, a short documentary in the private cinema and an architectural tour of the antique villas
  • year-round art exhibitions for in-house guests and photography sessions in the grounds
  • private guided outings to the Bund, Yuyuan Garden, a tea tasting in Xintiandi and the water town of Zhujiajiao, plus day trips to Hangzhou and Suzhou
For children

The Children’s Discovery Centre welcomes children aged 5–12 for lantern making, paper cutting, pottery, tea ceremonies and Chinese shadow-puppet shows, with a separate room for younger children. Children’s yoga and spa treatments can be arranged, festival workshops run during traditional Chinese holidays, and children help tend seedlings grown from the King Camphor Tree. Families can borrow bicycles free of charge, and toys and games can be set up in the rooms on request.

Restaurants & bars

The kitchens draw on the resort’s own organic garden, and the restaurants also welcome non-residents.

  • Arva — lakeside Italian cooking in the simple farm-to-table spirit
  • Lazhu — the cuisine of Jiangxi province, overlooking a bamboo grove, with several private dining rooms facing the garden
  • Yinlu — Cantonese hot pot in a bright room among the bamboo, looking across the lake to the camphor forest, with a late-evening yakitori menu
  • Lounge — afternoon tea and a broad drinks list of rare spirits, wines, craft beers and cocktails
  • Bei TeaHouse — a teahouse in a historic building close to the resort, devoted to the Chinese tea tradition

Chinese afternoon tea can also be served on the lake, and there are wine-paired dinners drawing on the resort’s own cellar.
