Tierra Patagonia

About this hotel

General information

Tierra Patagonia sits on a bluff above Lake Sarmiento, facing the Paine massif, and was designed to sit quietly within the landscape. Chilean architect Cazú Zegers, with Rodrigo Ferrer and Roberto Benavente, shaped a long, curving building clad in local lenga wood that resembles a great prehistoric creature resting by the water. Plants cleared for construction were raised in a greenhouse and replanted afterwards; solar panels supply energy and single-use plastics have been removed.

Inside are 40 rooms and suites, a restaurant beneath a rippling timber ceiling, a circular bar, a fireside library and small galleries of local art. The lodge is seasonal, open in the warmer months, and runs on an all-inclusive basis: breakfast, lunch and dinner, an open bar with house wines and spirits, two half-day or one full-day guided excursion each day shared with other guests, the indoor pool and spa thermal area, and shared return transfers from Puerto Natales airport.

Location

The lodge stands on the shore of Lake Sarmiento by Torres del Paine National Park, a 2,400 km² UNESCO biosphere reserve in the Magallanes region of southern Chilean Patagonia. LATAM and SKY fly from Santiago to Puerto Natales in about two hours; from there the lodge's scheduled shared transfer takes an hour, while suite guests travel privately with a driver.

Spa

Uma Spa, reserved for in-house guests, occupies a glass pavilion with a heated indoor infinity pool fitted with hydro-massage and water jets, an open-air whirlpool, sauna, steam room, relaxation areas and a yoga studio. Facials, massages, wraps and scrubs draw on local ingredients such as calafate, maqui, Chilean laurel and Patagonian herbs; the signature rituals are Austral Harmony and Patagonia Signature Ritual. Yoga classes for all levels run Monday to Friday. The pool and thermal facilities are included; treatments are charged separately.

Sports & leisure

Each day guests choose from the shared Signature excursions included in the stay; suite guests go out privately with a driver-guide. The range covers:

  • hikes to the Base of the Towers, into the French Valley and over the full-day D’Agostini Pass, plus Hunter’s Trail, Condor Lookout, Cuernos Viewpoint, the bridges of Grey Glacier, Blue Lagoon, Green Lagoon and Origins of Life among ancient thrombolites;
  • scenic drives (Sierra Baguales Scenic, Postcards of Patagonia) and wildlife walks in the Vega Castillo wetlands;
  • horse rides across open steppe and working estancias with a seasoned gaucho, and guided e-bike outings.

At extra cost the lodge arranges Heli Adventure helicopter flights, puma tracking (Leona Amarga, Puma Pursuit), kayaking on the Grey River, fly fishing, sailing to Grey Glacier and a Patagonian Cultural Experience.

For children

Children aged ten and over are welcome. The Superior Room can interconnect with a neighbouring suite, which suits families or small groups.

Restaurants & bars

The restaurant, with panoramic windows onto the mountains and lake, serves contemporary Chilean cooking rooted in traditional Patagonian recipes, with lamb, king crab, rhubarb and foraged berries. The circular bar at the heart of the lodge is where guests gather after excursions over Chilean wines, Patagonian craft beers and cocktails such as the signature Calafate Sour, made with pisco and calafate berries, alongside home-made sopaipillas. All meals and the open bar with house wines and spirits are included, while a cellar list is available at extra cost. There is no room service, and the mood is relaxed enough for hiking boots at the bar.

Swimming

Swimming is in Uma Spa's heated indoor infinity pool with hydro-massage and water jets, with an open-air whirlpool looking out over the steppe and mountains.
