The Singular Patagonia

About this hotel

General information

The Singular Patagonia occupies the former Puerto Bories cold-storage plant on the Última Esperanza fjord. Linked to the Sociedad Explotadora Tierra del Fuego, founded in 1915, the plant was the most important of its kind in Chilean–Argentine Patagonia and was declared a National Monument in 1996. Machinery shipped from England at the turn of the 20th century still stands in the hotel’s passageways, and the restored timber pier from which wool once left for world markets reaches out over the water.

The museum-hotel has 57 rooms, every one facing the fjord, furnished with custom-made, hand-crafted pieces set against the industrial heritage. In-house guests are taken on a guided tour of the old plant, and the museum is also open to outside visitors. Stays are offered either on a bed-and-breakfast basis, with meals and excursions à la carte, or as the Complete Experience, which covers full dining and daily excursions; programmes run from a single night to several. The hotel is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

Location

The hotel sits at Puerto Bories on the shore of the Señoret Channel, at the head of the Última Esperanza fjord in the Magallanes region, five minutes by car from Puerto Natales and well placed for Torres del Paine National Park. From Santiago, a flight of about 3.5 hours reaches Punta Arenas, followed by a drive of around 2.5 hours; travellers from Argentina come via El Calafate. The hotel meets guests at the airport.

Spa

The Singular Spa is an eco-spa of roughly 280 m², where oils and moisturisers are made from organic plants and fruit. Facilities include a heated indoor–outdoor pool, a sauna, a steam room and a relaxation area looking onto the fjord. Treatments and facilities are reserved for hotel guests.

Sports & leisure

A team of in-house guides leads more than 20 expeditions of varying difficulty, some into terrain no other hotel or operator uses:

  • fjord and glacier navigation aboard one of the hotel’s two fast boats
  • treks in Torres del Paine National Park past icebergs and waterfalls
  • horse riding on private ranches and kayaking, including on the Grey River
  • fly fishing and a puma and wildlife photo safari
  • the Milodon Cave and walking tours of historic Puerto Natales
  • a picnic on a private reserve, a cookery masterclass and an olive oil tasting
Restaurants & bars

The kitchen reworks regional recipes around local produce such as guanaco, king crab, austral hake, lamb, rhubarb and Patagonian honey, with wines drawn from every growing valley in Chile:

  • The Singular Restaurant — Patagonian cooking at lunch and dinner in a dining room that seats more than 100
  • Bar — handcrafted cocktails from late morning until midnight
  • El Desayunador — breakfast built on local produce, overlooking the Señoret Channel
  • El Asador — wood-fired meats plus vegan dishes of local vegetables in a 19th-century setting
Swimming

The spa’s heated pool runs from indoors to the open air.
