About this hotel
General information
Explora Torres del Paine is a 50-room lodge on the shore of turquoise Lake Pehoé, deep inside Torres del Paine National Park. It was designed by the Chilean architect José Cruz Ovalle and set carefully into the wild landscape around it. Cypress, lenga and almendrillo woods are central to the design, which is built around the idea of a luxury of essentials.
Stays run on a fully all-inclusive programme covering accommodation, unlimited guided Explorations, all meals and drinks including Chilean wines and spirits, use of the spa facilities, national park entrance fees and transfers from the airports at Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas, with no extra charge for the activities. Explora recommends at least five nights to get to know Patagonia properly, and six for a fuller picture of the region. The lodge operates year-round.
Location
The lodge sits beside the Salto Chico waterfall on Lake Pehoé, inside Torres del Paine National Park in the Magallanes region, facing the Paine massif. Puerto Natales is about 112 km away, a drive of 1.5–2 hours, and Punta Arenas around 4.5 hours. Complimentary transfers collect guests from both airports at set times, and Explora’s own ferry carries them across the lake.
Spa
The spa has a heated indoor pool, a steam sauna and four open-air hot tubs looking out over the park’s peaks. The facilities are part of the programme; massages and other treatments are charged separately.
Sports & leisure
More than 40 guided Explorations are included, run in groups of no more than eight by bilingual guides trained at Explora’s own School of Guides. They are spread across six zones, from Patagonian steppe and lenga forest to glaciers and high summits, and tailored to each guest’s fitness and interests; private Explorations are available at extra cost. Options include:
- treks to the base of the Paine towers and to the British Camp and into the French Valley
- catamaran trips on Lakes Grey and Pehoé and hikes to Grey Glacier
- kayaking on the lakes
- high-mountain ascents
- horseback rides with gauchos at Estancia 2 de Enero, on Explora’s private conservation reserve of about 6,000 hectares, open only to lodge guests
- wildlife watching for guanacos, rheas, foxes, condors, flamingos and pumas
For children
Rooms can take an extra bed for a child or a cot. Explorations are adapted to each guest’s fitness and interests, so horseback rides, catamaran trips and wildlife outings suit those who prefer to skip the harder treks.
Restaurants & bars
The dining room overlooks Lake Pehoé and serves dishes drawn from regional Patagonian cooking and gaucho tradition, made with local produce; breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, as are the meals and snacks on full-day Explorations. The bar is an open bar, and the culinary team builds the wine list from Chile’s best-known vineyards, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenère to the fore.
Swimming
The spa has a heated indoor pool and four open-air hot tubs with mountain views, all included in the programme.
