Awasi Patagonia

About this hotel

General information

Awasi Patagonia is a deliberately small lodge in the far south of Chilean Patagonia, set on a private reserve of some 2,800 hectares that looks out to the Paine massif and Lake Sarmiento. Only 16 stand-alone villas are spread through native lenga and ñirre woodland, built in warm local timber and opened up with large windows so that forest, lake and granite towers stay in view from indoors. Guanacos, rheas, foxes, condors and pumas are regularly seen on the surrounding land.

The stay is fully hosted and shaped around privacy: each villa has its own guide and 4×4 vehicle, and days are planned to the guests’ pace and interests rather than a group timetable. Meals are served in a restaurant reserved for those staying at the lodge, and Awasi Patagonia is a member of Relais & Châteaux.

Location

The lodge sits on Estancia Tercera Barranca in the Magallanes region, with views across Lake Sarmiento to Torres del Paine National Park. The closest airport is Puerto Natales, served by direct domestic flights from Santiago and about 1 h 45 min away by road; Punta Arenas airport is roughly five hours by private transfer, and El Calafate in Argentina four to five hours including the border crossing. Private airport transfers are part of the stay.

Spa

Wellness is low-key: every villa has its own outdoor hot tub facing the forest and mountains, and stays in the Cenit Villa include a 60-minute massage for each guest.

Sports & leisure

Each day brings private outings with a guide and 4×4 — hiking, riding, cycling and wildlife watching. Routes include:

  • Base Torres — a demanding climb to the foot of the granite towers
  • the French Valley and the Ferrier and Cuernos lookouts inside the park
  • the Grey Glacier lookout, reached partly by ferry, facing the icefield
  • Sierra Baguales with its fossils, and the Aonikenk Trail with rock art
  • Sarmiento Chico with its thrombolites, and the Vega Castillo wetland for birdwatching
  • six trails across Awasi’s own conservation area
  • horseback riding with local gauchos
  • dawn puma tracking on the reserve (extra charge)
For children

Children aged 14 and over are welcome; families travelling with younger children are asked to contact the reservations team in advance.

Restaurants & bars

The lodge restaurant, open only to Awasi guests, cooks Patagonian food from seasonal local produce — fish from the southern Pacific fjords, Patagonian lamb, king crab, calafate berries — and adapts its menus to each guest’s tastes. On excursions the kitchen sends out picnics and field lunches, so many meals are eaten out in the landscape.
