About this hotel
General information
Amansara occupies an early-1960s modernist villa on the road from Siem Reap to Angkor, a fine example of New Khmer Architecture, the style that married the Modern Movement to Angkorian grandeur and the plain forms of village building. Stone colonnades frame a lawn with a great tree at its centre, covered walkways link the whole estate, and still ponds reflect the pavilions. Carved apsara reliefs line the walls; inside, the palette is pale stone, terrazzo and dark timber.
It is a small place of 24 suites, 13 of them with their own pool. At its heart is a lofty, light-filled rotunda used for dining, alongside the original curving pool, a 25-metre lap pool, a spa and a movement studio. The temples are the real reason to come: each morning guests set out for Angkor with their own guide.
Location
The resort stands on the Road to Angkor in Siem Reap, between the town and Angkor Archaeological Park, around 10 minutes from Angkor Wat. Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport is about a 60-minute drive away; guests staying three nights or more receive complimentary return transfers with fast-track immigration, which can also be arranged on request for shorter stays. The resort’s own tuk-tuks take guests around town free of charge.
Spa
Aman Spa is reached by a path beside a reflecting pond and has four treatment rooms, each with its own steam bath and shower. The menu draws on traditional Cambodian techniques: full-body scrubs, oil massages and herbal compress massages. The signature Apsara Spa Ritual for women combines a herbal scrub, an aromatherapy clay wrap, a Khmer chest mask, a rice compress and a short facial, and there is also the technology-led Aman Advanced Facial. Wellbeing sessions include private sunrise yoga in the studio or gardens, forest therapy in the Angkorian woodland, a forest walking meditation led by a monk and a ritual water blessing with flower-infused water at a pagoda.
Sports & leisure
There is a fitness centre and a yoga and movement studio, and two pools including a 25-metre lap pool. The temples set the rhythm: departures for Angkor Wat leave at 5am to arrive with the first light, followed by the Bayon in Angkor Thom and the tree-root-bound Ta Prohm, all by the resort’s tuk-tuks with a private driver and an English-speaking guide. Guides also lead jungle treks through the forests around the temples, mountain-bike rides along sandy tracks to 10th-century ruins hidden in the jungle and vintage-jeep drives on dirt roads past villages, rice fields and sugar palms; full-day trips reach Beng Mealea and Koh Ker.
At sunset the resort’s boats head out on Tonlé Sap lake past houses on stilts. The curator of the Angkor National Museum leads private tours of its galleries, and the resort hosts talks by visiting academics, evenings of classical Cambodian dance and circus performances. Guests can also take an apsara dance class, try silk weaving, ceramics or lotus folding, or join a chef at the local market before a hands-on Khmer cooking class.
Restaurants & bars
The kitchen moves between traditional Khmer and international dishes; non-residents are welcome when space allows:
- The Dining Room — the circular rotunda with two terraces over the lawns and the main pool, an all-day menu from 6am to 10.30pm, a walk-in cheese and wine cellar and a lounge with freshly baked cakes; afternoon tea is served here
- Khmer Village House — a traditional stilted house in a garden within Angkor Archaeological Park overlooking the 10th-century Srah Srang reservoir, for breakfast after the temples, cooking classes and candlelit charcoal-cooked dinners with live music
- Roof Terrace — a terrace among the treetops on the estate’s wooded edge, open in season for evening cocktails and private breakfasts and dinners
For special evenings a chef prepares a Cambodian feast under the stars to live Khmer music, and a day on Tonlé Sap can end with dinner at a 10th-century temple lit by a thousand candles.
