About this hotel
General information
The Empire Brunei sits on a private 180-hectare estate at Jerudong, on the north coast of Borneo, where tropical rainforest runs almost down to the South China Sea. The main building, the Atrium, opens into a tall, light-filled lobby lined with marble columns; the Seaview, Lagoon and Waterfall buildings are set around it in landscaped gardens, and a group of private villas stands at the western edge of the grounds. Buggies shuttle guests between them.
The resort works like a self-contained holiday town: two private beaches, lagoons, five pools, an 18-hole championship golf course, a cinema, a bowling hall, a spa and the Country Club with its courts and studios. With more than 500 rooms and suites plus 16 villas, it suits slow days on the shore as well as active ones built around golf, the water and trips into the rainforest.
Location
The resort lies at Jerudong, on the South China Sea coast in the Brunei-Muara district, a short way from the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. Rainforest surrounds the estate, and its beaches face the open sea.
Spa
The spa, at the Country Club, blends traditional healing therapies with modern treatments. The menu includes the Empire Signature massage, which combines Balinese, Taksu and Swedish techniques, Balinese and sports massages, foot reflexology, a Balinese Boreh wrap, a Javanese Lulur scrub and a range of facials, among them the energising Vitality of the Glaciers by Valmont. The club’s changing rooms add showers, a Jacuzzi and a plunge pool.
Sports & leisure
Golf is the centrepiece: an 18-hole, par-71 championship course with marked changes of elevation, nine holes of which are floodlit for night play. Beside it are a practice facility with a floodlit driving range, practice bunkers, a short-game area and a putting green, a pro shop and a golf academy.
- Country Club — three floodlit artificial-grass tennis courts, two squash courts, two badminton courts, an indoor basketball court, a multipurpose court for futsal and netball, pool and snooker, table tennis
- fitness centre with mixed and ladies-only gyms, plus daily group classes in air-conditioned studios
- an eight-lane bowling hall and a three-screen cinema
- kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and bicycles from the Marine Centre; 30-minute boat rides from the resort’s jetty at weekends
- excursions: Kampong Ayer water village by boat along the Brunei River, Ulu Temburong National Park for a guided rainforest walk and birdwatching, mangrove cruises to spot wild proboscis monkeys, diving on coral reefs and wrecks, and sightseeing in Bandar Seri Begawan
For children
The Children’s Club, for ages up to 12, opens daily beside the Grand Lagoon Pool: a safe play area with a splash pool and slide, and supervised activities every day. Children’s bicycles can also be hired for exploring the grounds.
Restaurants & bars
Six venues share the estate; all cook with halal ingredients and close for Friday prayers from 12:00 to 14:00.
- Atrium Café — breakfast buffet
- Lobby Lounge — afternoon tea, light meals, pastries and desserts in the lobby
- Pantai — Asian à la carte lunch and dinner on the beachfront
- Spaghettini — Italian dinners on the sixth level of the Atrium
- Zen — Japanese cuisine with a teppanyaki grill
- Zest — café in the Empire Arcade for light meals, pastries, desserts and drinks
Swimming
Two private sandy beaches, East Beach and West Beach, look onto warm, clear South China Sea water. Five pools complete the picture: the lagoon-style Grand Lagoon Pool, the River Pool (Friday to Sunday), the Wet Edge Pool, the Indoor Lap Pool and the Children’s Club Pool.
