About this hotel
General information
Peter Island Resort occupies its own private island in the British Virgin Islands, south of Tortola. Of the island’s roughly 730 hectares only about 120 are developed; the rest is hills, trails and empty coves. The resort runs along Deadman’s Beach, a crescent of white sand about 1.6 km long, and has its own yacht club, with a marina for yachts of up to 61 m.
There are 52 guest rooms, 28 of them right on the beach, plus two private villas, Hawk’s Nest and Falcon’s Nest. Guests have a spa beside Big Reef Bay, two restaurants with bars, two pools and several beaches within walking distance. The island looks after itself: drinking water comes from a reverse-osmosis plant, wind generators supply power, grey water irrigates the gardens and waste is recycled.
Location
Peter Island lies south of Tortola, across the channel. From the international airport on Beef Island (EIS) it is about 20 minutes by taxi to the Peter Island Ferry Launch, where the resort’s own ferry makes the 30-minute crossing; the resort arranges the whole transfer. Scheduled public ferries also run daily. From St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, guests can come by water taxi from Red Hook (about 1 hour 15 minutes) or by helicopter (about 30 minutes).
Spa
The Spa at Peter Island covers about 930 m², with seven treatment rooms, a raised infinity pool, an ocean-side whirlpool and a quiet garden, along with manicure and pedicure stations and a hair salon. Treatments, couples’ massages among them, use Elemis, 111SKIN, Farmhouse Fresh, Pure Fiji and the local tea brand Herbal Immense.
Sports & leisure
The fitness centre fills two oceanfront pavilions on Big Reef Bay and is open daily from 6 am to 9 pm. At the Water Sports Pavilion on Deadman’s Beach, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkel gear are free to use; the snorkelling is best in the water between the beach and Dead Chest Island, and off White Bay Beach there are bright reefs and sea turtles. The yacht club adds pickleball and basketball courts, bocce and lawn games.
The island is easy to explore on foot: a self-guided loop trail of about 8 km, with water stations along the way, climbs steeply to the Sunset Loop on the island’s crest. A guided outing to a sunset lookout runs every evening, with drinks and snacks available to pre-order.
Restaurants & bars
The Drake Steakhouse, at the main lodge, is a classic American steakhouse with Caribbean touches: breakfast (a continental spread plus à la carte) and Caribbean-leaning lunches are served on the terrace and by the pool, and dinner brings steaks, seafood, cocktails and a long wine list, with a private dining room and a weekly Bacchus wine dinner. Drunken Pelican, beside the yacht club pool, is the relaxed one, with craft cocktails, pizza through the day, fish and whole lobster, and live entertainment once a week. Both have bars open daily from 11 am to 10.30 pm. The resort also sets up picnics on secluded beaches and candlelit dinners under the stars.
Swimming
Deadman’s Beach is a long white-sand crescent with cabanas and a marked swimming zone; at its far end lies the smaller Little Deadman’s Beach, and beyond it the secluded Honeymoon Beach with a single cabana. White Bay Beach faces Norman Island and has cabanas to reserve and room for a picnic. The infinity pool at the lodge and the yacht club pool are open from sunrise to sunset, and the spa has a raised infinity pool of its own.

The 52 rooms and suites sit on Deadman’s Beach in low one- and two-storey buildings, some right on the sand and others near the start of the beach, with two private villas set apart. Daily breakfast at The Drake Steakhouse is included in every category.
