About this hotel
General information
Copacabana Palace opened on the Copacabana seafront in 1923, as Brazil celebrated a century of independence, and was conceived from the outset as the most lavish hotel of its age. Its façade is the work of architect Joseph Gire, and over the following hundred years the hotel welcomed guests from Brigitte Bardot to Ella Fitzgerald while lending its name to Rio de Janeiro’s grandest carnival balls and New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Today the hotel pairs the historic Main Building, where original period details have been carefully preserved, with the Pool Wing, whose suites were finished by Brazilian artisans. Within its walls are the restaurants Lumio, MEE and Pérgula, the Copacabana Palace Spa, a half-Olympic outdoor pool, rooftop tennis courts, a boutique and the Teatro Fernanda Montenegro, one of 13 event spaces for up to 2,000 guests.
Location
The hotel stands on Avenida Atlântica, directly on Copacabana Beach, whose sand curves for some four kilometres beneath forested mountains. Santos Dumont domestic airport is about 15 minutes away by car and Rio de Janeiro International (GIG) about 45 minutes; the hotel arranges airport transfers, including in electric and hybrid vehicles.
Spa
The Copacabana Palace Spa works with Brazilian natural ingredients such as açaí, guaraná and Amazonian clay. The menu includes the signature Copacabana Palace Massage, the Amazonia body ritual, the “Flying Down to Rio” jet-lag treatment, shiatsu, a tropical exfoliation and a choice of facials.
Sports & leisure
Swimming is in the half-Olympic outdoor pool, with a second pool on the sixth floor for guests in the top-floor suites; there are also rooftop tennis courts and a fitness centre. The hotel arranges outings in and around the city:
- sunrise on Sugarloaf Mountain
- an introduction to Rio’s samba culture
- an architecture tour and a highlights-of-Rio tour
- a football experience at the city’s most famous stadium
- a five-hour sail across the bay with stops for a swim
- a day trip to the coast beyond the city
For children
From May to September a kids’ club runs at weekends and when the hotel is busy, with slime-making, cupcake decorating, painting workshops, video games, toys and play tents. Children aged 1–5 join with a parent and those aged 6 and over can take part on their own; babysitting is available on request, and many rooms can take a cot for a child under two.
Restaurants & bars
Dining at the hotel moves between Brazil, Italy and Asia:
- Lumio — southern Italian fine dining from executive chef Nello Cassese, served as a tasting menu only to 38 guests a night, with the Dom Pérignon Table looking onto the pass
- MEE — pan-Asian cooking drawing on Japan, Korea, Thailand, China and India, with à la carte, tasting menus (vegan included), omakase and more than 25 sakes; open every evening
- Pérgula — Brazilian classics with a Mediterranean touch and Neapolitan-style pizza in one of Rio’s most colourful dining rooms, open from breakfast to dinner and home to Sunday brunch, feijoada and the Grill do Pérgula
- Pool Bar — cocktails and light bites beside the pool
Swimming
Guests have a private area on Copacabana Beach with cabanas and loungers. The half-Olympic pool is reserved for hotel guests.
Pets
Small dogs and cats up to 5 kg are welcome.
