Zarafa Camp

About this hotel

General information

Zarafa Camp is a small Great Plains camp in the private Selinda Reserve, the stretch of wilderness that links the Okavango Delta with the Linyanti waterways. It belongs to the operator’s Réserve Collection and to Relais & Châteaux. Shaded by old ebony trees, the camp overlooks the Zibadianja Lagoon, where the Savuti Channel begins; it is built from recycled hardwood and canvas and runs on power from its own solar farm.

With only four tented suites, the camp stays quiet and private. The area is known above all for leopards and wild dogs, while lion, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, red lechwe, zebra, giraffe, roan and sable are also seen; hippos live in the lagoon and elephants often wander through camp. A colony of African skimmers nests nearby. All meals, drinks (champagne and premium spirits included), laundry and scheduled activities are part of the stay.

Location

The camp lies in the private Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana, where the Okavango Delta meets the Linyanti waterways, on the shore of the Zibadianja Lagoon at the head of the Savuti Channel. Guests arrive by light aircraft: scheduled inter-camp flights, including connections from Maun or Kasane airports, are included.

Spa

The camp has a spa whose therapists offer massages and other treatments, given in the suite or on the open-air deck beside the private pool.

Sports & leisure

Scheduled activities are included; time on the water depends on seasonal water levels:

  • photographic game drives in open vehicles in the early morning and late afternoon;
  • guided walks with professional guides;
  • outings on the HES Zib pontoon boat among the lagoon’s floating islands;
  • sundowner cruises on the Zibadianja Lagoon;
  • seasonal catch-and-release fishing, tigerfish included;
  • an outdoor gym.

Guests have free use of a professional camera with lenses during their stay.

For children

The camp takes part in the Great Plains Young Explorers programme: each child receives an activity book and a safari journal covering animal tracks, Setswana words, plants, animals and the stars, plus word games. Guides teach tracking and bush survival skills, and activities follow each child’s age and interests rather than a fixed schedule.

Restaurants & bars

There are no separate restaurants; camp life centres on the main area beneath the ebony trees, with a lounge, indoor and outdoor dining areas and a small bush boutique. Private dinners can be arranged in the camp’s wine cellar.

Swimming

There is no shared pool; instead, each suite has its own plunge pool on its private deck.

Rooms

Four tented suites of more than 100 m² each stand on generous decks of reclaimed railway sleepers, with hand-carved Zanzibar doors as the defining detail.

In each room

Each suite has a lounge opening into the bedroom, an open-plan bathroom with a shower and a copper claw-foot bath, a private deck with a plunge pool, an outdoor shower and seating, and a professional camera for the stay.
