Wilderness Vumbura Plains

About this hotel

General information

Wilderness Vumbura Plains is a Wilderness camp on an island in the far north of the Okavango Delta, where seasonally flooded grassland meets permanent channels and wooded islands. It is made up of two small camps, North and South, with seven units each, and is the most spacious of the operator’s Delta camps. Built of wood, glass and canvas, the suites stand on raised decks beneath the tree canopy, so the camp almost dissolves into its setting; elephants and hippos often feed right below the boardwalks.

What sets it apart is the mix of land and water within a single stay: a game drive one afternoon, a glide along the channels by mokoro or motorboat the next morning. Wildlife is plentiful all year, from lion, leopard and wild dog to buffalo, elephant, sable antelope, sitatunga and red lechwe. Children of all ages are welcome. Accommodation, all meals, twice-daily activities, laundry and local drinks (premium imported brands and champagne aside) are included.

Location

The camp lies in the private 60,000-hectare Vumbura Concession in the far north of the Okavango Delta, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. Guests fly in by light aircraft from Maun to the Vumbura airstrip, and Wilderness Air runs daily circuits between the Wilderness camps in the Delta.

Sports & leisure

The activity programme is among the broadest in the Wilderness Delta camps, with some outings depending on water levels:

  • morning and afternoon game drives;
  • guided walks;
  • mokoro trips in traditional dugout canoes along quiet channels;
  • motorboat outings past hippos, crocodiles and birdlife, with a sundowner on the water;
  • catch-and-release fishing, mostly for tilapia and catfish;
  • bird-watching.

The camp works with the Okavango Community Trust, which brings together five local villages, and a small shop sells pieces made by local craftspeople.

For children

Children aged 6 to 12 can be paired with a Bush Buddy, a specially trained member of the camp team who keeps them entertained throughout the stay. Families can also arrange a dedicated family guide.

Restaurants & bars

Meals are served in the open lounge and dining room, reached along wooden walkways from the suites. The menu is built on local, seasonal produce and the region’s traditions: signature dishes use tswii, the powdered root of the Okavango waterlily, and local phapata bread is baked over the morning fire. Private dining is possible in each suite’s covered sala, and evenings tend to end around the fire under the stars.

Swimming

There is no shared pool: instead, every suite has its own plunge pool on a deck facing the floodplain.

Rooms

Fourteen units are split between the two camps: six suites and two family units at North, six suites at South. All stand on raised decks along the water’s edge.

In each room

Each suite has a private viewing deck with a plunge pool and sun loungers and a covered sala for siestas and private dining; Wi-Fi is available in camp.

Suite

A spacious suite on a raised wooden deck by the water, with a private viewing deck, plunge pool, sun loungers and a covered sala for resting and dining.

Family Room

One of two family units at North camp, set up for parents travelling with children and, like the suites, raised on decking above the floodplain.
