About this hotel
General information
Wilderness Savuti is a small, classic camp on the banks of the Savuti Channel in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve. Savuti means “mystery”, and the landscape lives up to it: the channel follows its own rhythm, its flow governed by subtle shifts in the tectonic plates beneath. When the water arrives, thirsty wildlife gathers along its banks; when it recedes, grassy plains open up in its place, drawing antelope and, close behind them, the predators.
There are just six spacious tents, raised to look out over the channel or, in the dry months, the floodplain. The thatched dining room and shared spaces are finished in earthy tones that settle quietly into the setting. Savuti is known for its large lion prides of 20–30 animals and for the dry-season encounters between lions and elephants that are rare elsewhere in Africa. Stays include all meals, two daily drives or other activities, laundry and local drinks, except premium imported brands and champagne.
Location
The camp sits on the Savuti Channel in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, in northern Botswana between the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. It is about a three-hour drive from Kasane, or a short Wilderness Air light-aircraft flight — around 50–60 minutes from Maun or 30–40 minutes from Kasane — followed by a game-vehicle transfer from the airstrip to camp.
Sports & leisure
The area holds buffalo, sable, roan and tsessebe, elephant, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena and wild dog, with a notably high density of predators, and it is recognised as an Important Bird Area. Activities at the camp:
- two daily game drives in open vehicles;
- a hide overlooking a waterhole, where wildlife comes within very close range;
- birding, at its richest in the green season;
- guided nature walks, depending on the season;
- a night in the open on the camp’s sleep-out deck;
- the Star Bed — a platform about three metres off the ground facing the channels, with a wooden roof, an open-air dining area, a sunken lounge and its own fire pit;
- a pool for the hours between drives.
Restaurants & bars
The kitchen builds its menus around traditional Botswana dishes — seswa (slow-cooked, pounded meat), oxtail, and samp (crushed maize) with beans — using fresh produce grown by local communities and in Maun. Meals are taken in the thatched dining room, many dinners are served in the boma, an open-air circle around the fire, and brunch can be laid out in the bush along the channel.
Swimming
The camp has a swimming pool for cooling off in the heat of the day between the morning and afternoon drives.
Rooms
Six spacious en suite tents are raised off the ground and face the Savuti Channel; the camp also offers a family room.
En suite bathroom, a private deck facing the channel that is well placed for birdwatching, and Wi-Fi.
