Duba Plains Camp

About this hotel

General information

Duba Plains Camp is a small Great Plains camp in the private Duba Concession of the Okavango Delta, set among floodplains, palm-studded islands and woodland. It belongs to the operator’s Réserve Collection and to Relais & Châteaux. The look draws on the classic African safari of the 1920s: decks built from recycled railway sleepers, warm textures and spaces that sit quietly in the landscape.

With just five suites, the camp feels calm and uncrowded. The area is best known for its lions, which swim the flooded channels after red lechwe and buffalo; wild dogs and leopards pass through all year, elephants and hippos are regular sightings, and more than 200 bird species have been recorded. All meals, drinks (champagne and premium spirits included), laundry and scheduled activities are part of the stay.

Location

The camp lies in the private Duba Concession in the Okavango Delta, a network of floodplains, palm islands and woodland where much of the landscape is water. Guests arrive by light aircraft: scheduled inter-camp flights, including connections from Maun or Kasane, are included.

Sports & leisure

Scheduled activities are included and follow the water levels in the Delta:

  • game drives in open vehicles;
  • guided bush walks;
  • mokoro trips in traditional dugout canoes along the channels;
  • boating;
  • bird-watching;
  • night photography of the Duba Plains baobab beneath the Milky Way;
  • helicopter flights to the San rock paintings of the Tsodilo Hills.

Guests have free use of a professional camera with lenses and good binoculars, and leave with all their wildlife photographs and video footage.

For children

The camp takes part in the Great Plains Young Explorers programme: each child receives an activity book and a safari journal covering animal tracks, Setswana words, plants, animals and the stars, plus word games. Guides teach tracking and bush survival skills, and activities are shaped around each child’s age and interests rather than a fixed schedule.

Restaurants & bars

There are no separate restaurants; camp life centres on the main area, with a dining room, lounge, interactive kitchen, wine cellar and library. A long raised deck beneath giant ebony trees is used for meals in the open.

Swimming

There is no shared pool; instead, each suite has its own private pool on the veranda, looking out over the floodplain.

Rooms

Five private suites stand on raised decks of recycled railway sleepers facing the floodplain, their interiors styled after the safaris of the 1920s.

In each room

Each suite has a lounge, a bathroom with double vanities, indoor and outdoor showers and a bath, ceiling fans and an eco-friendly air-conditioner above the bed, a private veranda with a pool and a shaded sala, and a professional camera and binoculars for the stay.
